THIS DARK MATERIAL
A book and film review blog featuring adult and YA fiction, alongside the newest theatrical releases! THIS DARK MATERIAL: BOOK REVIEW: THE BAD DAUGHTER My thoughts: The Bad Daughter is both simple and difficult to review. Every component—from characters to prose to plot—settles comfortably in the realm of just-good-enough, without ever aspiring towards the exceptional. Fielding avoids overwrought metaphors or unnecessarily complicated sentences; she tells her story aptly, butyou wouldn't
THIS DARK MATERIAL: DOWN THE TBR HOLE #9 As my Goodreads to-read shelf creeps closer to 500 books, I've been eyeing it with a growing feeling of apprehension. It would take forever to get through so manyand that's not counting all of the new books I hear about along the way.Thankfully I discovered Lost In A Story's series (by way of Boston Book Reader) at the beginning of the year and it sounds like a great way to trim down my TBR. THIS DARK MATERIAL: DOWN THE TBR HOLE #8 Down the TBR Hole #8. The Essential Tension: Selected Studies in Scientific Tradition and Change by Thomas Kuhn One of Kuhn's other books, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, was an excellent recommendation by my undergraduate advisor. It introduced me to thinking about science as a field and approaching the practice of scientific inquiry with a philosophical outlook. THIS DARK MATERIAL: DOWN THE TBR HOLE #10 This week I've kept 6/10 books on my to-read list. This was a bit of a "clearing out the cobwebs" week rather than a full-scale extermination. I might read some of the PASS titles later, if by some miracle I ever cleared my to-read pile, but I'm not too excited by theidea either.
THIS DARK MATERIAL: BOOK REVIEW: THE STRANGE BIRD DISCLAIMER: I received a free finished copy of this book from Farrar, Straus and Giroux in exchange for my honest review. The Strange Bird is a new kind of creature, built in a laboratory--she is part bird, part human, part many other things. THIS DARK MATERIAL: BOOK REVIEW: THE WICKED DEEP Suddenly the fates of two girls, not one, hang in the balance; stakes double while guaranteeing that one of the two cannot endure. It's a deliciously dark twist that forces you to rethink everything you've read and while I'm hunting for the time to re-read The Wicked Deep, I'm going to applaud Ernshaw for such a bold and satisfying twist. THIS DARK MATERIAL: BOOK REVIEW: A FALSE REPORT Based on investigative files and extensive interviews with the principals, A False Report is a serpentine tale of doubt, lies, and a hunt for justice, unveiling the disturbing reality of how sexual assault is investigated today--and the long history of skepticism toward rape victims. My thoughts: At times a very difficult book toread because

Bought at the same time I got Child 44, also by Smith, I was hoping to uncover a new mystery/thriller author. All I wound up with was an expensive collection of neatly trimmed and bound sheets of paper. THIS DARK MATERIAL: BOOK REVIEW: THE GOLD-SON But with Tommin’s humanity slipping away, the fate-crossed pair has everything to lose unless they can find a way to outsmart a magical curse centuries in the making. The Gold-Son truly is a tale of two books for me. Its first half progresses with promise, alternating viewpoints between Tommin and his fellow gold-child Eve. A book and film review blog featuring adult and YA fiction, alongside the newest theatrical releases!
THIS DARK MATERIAL: BOOK REVIEW: MY DEAR HAMILTON Despite some fiddling with the historical timeline, My Dear Hamilton remains steadfastly true to the character and spirit of Eliza and her contemporaries. Those who delight in Hamilton's pop culture comeback will easily lose themselves in his wife's perspective. For the girls and young women, in particular, who admire a certain musical, My Dear THIS DARK MATERIAL: BOOK REVIEW: A FALSE REPORT Based on investigative files and extensive interviews with the principals, A False Report is a serpentine tale of doubt, lies, and a hunt for justice, unveiling the disturbing reality of how sexual assault is investigated today--and the long history of skepticism toward rape victims. In spite of its relatively short length every page of Old Man was a monumental struggle.
