SEAN SPICER WILL SEND YOUR LOVED ONES A CUSTOM VALENTINE'S DAY MESSAGEFOR JUST $199
February 12, 2020
Sean Spicer has the answer to your last-minute Valentine's Dayscramble.
The former White House press secretary is generously offering up custom video messages once priced at $400 for a mere $199 through the end of February. "If you forgot to get someone you love a thoughtful Valentine's Day gift, it's not too late," Spicer shared in an Instagram video posted Tuesday. Just find him on the Cameo app and you'll "get the best way to tell someone you love them (a video from me)" by Friday. While it may seem like a high price from a man who once gave us somewhat daily video messages on the government's dime, Spicer isn't just pocketing your cash. Every dollar will go to The Independence Fund, specifically to help buy wheelchairs for wounded veterans, Spicer says on Cameo. So forget the flowers that will wilt in a week and get a custom message that will hold your loved one's interest for at least as long. _KathrynKrawczyk_

TRUMP ATTACKS ROGER STONE JUROR — AND THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT — ON11:50 a.m.
President Trump is continuing to involve himself in the Roger Stone case, on Thursday going after a specific juror for alleged bias. Trump, who earlier this week slammed the sentencing recommendation for his longtime adviser only for the Justice Department to change course,
in a Thursday tweet suggested the forewoman in the jury that found Stone guilty "had significant bias." He also attacked the Justice Department, sarcastically placing the word "justice" in quotes. Trump's tweet came after Fox News reported on social media activity from juror Tomeka Hart, who ran for Congress as a Democrat in 2012, that Fox wrote "suggested a strong political bias" against President Trump, such as a tweet in which she reportedly described Trump and his supporters as "racist." In a _Fox & Friends_ segment Thursday morning, Fox News' Andrew Napolitano argued Stone is "absolutely entitled to a new trial." "She's entitled to whatever opinions she wants, and she can put whatever she wants on social media, but she can't be a juror in a trial rife with the politics of Donald Trump and Roger Stone," Napolitano also said. Earlier this week, all four prosecutors in the case quit after the Justice Department reversed its sentencing recommendation for Stone, which Trump blasted on Twitter. Trump later congratulated Attorney General William Barr for "taking charge" of the case. The House Judiciary Committee cited these events in a letter to Barr on Wednesday setting testimony for next month, saying they "raise grave questions about your leadership."_Brendan Morrow_

HOPE HICKS IS RETURNING TO THE WHITE HOUSE10:54 a.m.
Alex Wong/Getty Images One of President Trump's most trusted aides is making a comeback. Hope Hicks, Trump's close adviser during the 2016 election and eventual White House communications director, has accepted a role that will put her back on Trump's staff. After resigning from the Trump team in 2018, Hicks will soon return as a counselor to the president, the White House confirms to _The New York Times_.
Hicks will report to Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, and will share the same title as Kellyanne Conway, when she begins her job within the next few weeks. Hicks worked on Trump's 2016run
and will do the same this year, a senior official told the _Times_. She'll also work on projects Kushner oversees — presumably his work in the Middle East and on criminal justice reform. Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia repeatedly mentioned Hicks. She had given several hours of testimony to the House Intelligence Committee in March 2018, and resigned from the White House the next day. Shetestified

MICHAEL BLOOMBERG SAYS HIS MONEY IS WHY TRUMP GOT IMPEACHED10:01 a.m.
Brett Carlsen/Getty Images Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been rising through the Democratic primary race, most likely because of the absolutely massive amount of money he's poured into it. And at a Chattanooga, Tennessee rally on Wednesday, the billionaire made it clear just what that money can do, _Politico_ reports.
"In 2018, I helped flip the House" by bankrolling 21 Democraticchallengers
who eventually won Republican-held seats, Bloomberg said Wednesday. That led House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to return to her role at the top of the legislative body, and "let Pelosi and the House do what the Constitution says they should do — hold the president accountable," Bloomberg continued. "They started the impeachment process but it all came from that." Yes, Bloomberg, who has never held national political office, is now claiming he's the reason impeachment happened. It's likely just his latest attempt at using his financial superiority to get under President Trump's skin — as if the millions of dollars worth of TV and social media ads he's purchased weren't enough. _Kathryn Krawczyk_ wherever books are soldEdit
COLIN KAEPERNICK TO DISCUSS 'WHAT GOT ME TO THE POINT OF PROTESTING'IN NEW MEMOIR
9:17 a.m.
Carmen Mandato / Getty Images Colin Kaepernick has a memoir on the way, and he plans to delve into the question, "Why did I do it?" The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who started a movement in 2016 by kneeling during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and racism announced Thursday he's releasing a memoir through his new publishing company, Kaepernick Publishing, _The NewYork Times _reports
.
"I want to tell the story of my evolution, and the events that led me to protest systemic oppression, in hopes that it will inspire others to rise in action,” Kaepernick said in a statement. Kaepernick Publishing described the book as "part political awakening and part memoir." _The Washington Post_ reports Kaepernick has been shopping a book going back to 2017, though the _Times _notes he's "said very little" in the past few years since becoming a free agent. In an interview with _USA Today_,
Kaepernick explained, "I've had a lot of questions surrounding what got me to the point of protesting. Why did I do it? Why did I do it at that moment? Why wasn't it earlier in my career? A lot of questions surrounding what led me to that point. Which led me to wanting to share that story and give insight." Kaepernick, who settled his collusion lawsuit against the NFL last year, also told _USA Today_, "My desire to play football is still there. ... So I hope I get a call this offseason. JOHN KELLY SAYS VINDMAN DID THE RIGHT THING REPORTING TRUMP'S 'ILLEGAL' UKRAINE ORDER8:16 a.m.
Drew Angerer / Getty Images Former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly is defending one of the subjects of his old boss' ire. Kelly at an event on Wednesday night discussed Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman after he was removed from his National Security Council job last week. Vindman had testified in the impeachment inquiry about how he was alarmed by President Trump's phone call with Ukraine and spokeup about it.
"He did exactly what we teach them to do from cradle to grave," Kelly said of Vindman, _The Atlantic _reports.
"He went and told his boss what he just heard." Kelly went on to compare hearing Trump's phone call with Ukraine to hearing an "illegal order," saying Vindman was correct to report it. "We teach them, 'Don’t follow an illegal order,'" Kelly said. "And if you're ever given one, you'll raise it to whoever gives it to you that this is an illegal order, and then tell your boss.'" The White House has insisted that Vindman wasn't fired, but Trump said this week he "obviously wasn't happy with the job he did," and Vindman's lawyer said he was removed because Trump "decided to exact revenge." "Through the Obama administration up until that phone call, the policy of the U.S. was militarily to support Ukraine in their defensive fight against ... the Russians," Kelly said Wednesday. "And so, when the president said that continued support would be based on X, that essentially changed. And that's what that guy was most interested in." _Brendan Morrow_bad business

SOUTH SUDAN, CHINESE OIL INTERESTS BURIED 4 REPORTS OF DEADLY, DISFIGURING TOXIC OIL CONTAMINATION, _AP_ REPORTS7:39 a.m.
South Sudan's government and the two dominant oil companies in theimpoverished nation
,
Dar Petroleum and Greater Pioneer, have buried at least four environmental reports since 2013 that show serious water and soil contamination in two states with high rates of infertility, miscarriage, alarming birth defects, and unexplained deaths, Sam Mednick reports at _The Associated Press_. Doctors and
residents in oil-rich Union and Upper Nile states report children born without heads, with intestines outside their bodies, and nonfatal deformities like too many fingers and not enough limbs. Dar Petroleum was ordered to clean up its toxic oil mess in Upper Nile in 2018, but residents and industry insiders say the company never acted. Dar Petroleum and Greater Pioneer are both conglomerates controlled by Chinese state oil companies, with Sudan's state-run oil firm and companies from Malaysia, India, and Egypt. The first two reports _AP_ obtained from people with close knowledge of the oil operations were compiled by Sudan's oil and health ministries in 2013 and 2016. Dar Petroleum and Greater Pioneer conducted their own separate studies in 2018, both finding significant toxic contamination and health issues in the areas. "The people who provided the reports to _AP_ said they were purposely buried," Mednick reports. "An _AP_
reporter looking into the pollution and health issues was detained and questioned by government officials and government security forces working on behalf of the oil companies" There is no conclusive evidence that the mercury, manganese, arsenic, and other toxins found in the soil and water in Unity and Upper Nile caused these high rates of health problems, but the hidden reports and outside health experts draw a direct line. Neither company responded to _AP_'s many requests for response. Oil is the only significant export from South Sudan, a country formed nine years ago then mired in civil war. It accounts for 40 percent of GDP. Read more at _TheAssociated Press_

CAN MIKE BLOOMBERG BUY IRONIC MEME GLORY? YES, HE CAN.6:00 a.m.
Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg "has been pouring millions of dollars into Facebook and its sibling app, Instagram, since he jumped into the Democratic presidential race, easily outpacing the Trump campaign," the "reigning king of the social media realm," David Ingram reported at NBC News Wednesday morning. "It remains to be seen how the buttoned-up former mayor will fare on social media, an arena that favors unscripted moments, outrage, inside jokes, and memes." By Wednesday night we had the answer: He's doing great. "Bloomberg has contracted some of the biggest meme-makers on the internet to post sponsored content on Instagram promoting his presidential campaign," working with a new company, Meme 2020, _The New York Times_ reported late Wednesday. The lead strategist of Meme 2020 is Mick Purzycki, the CEO of Jerry Media, "a powerful force in the influencer economy," the _Times_ notes. The influencers involved in the project collectively have more than 60 million followers, and the participating accounts "all posted Bloomberg campaign ads in the form of fake direct messages from the candidate." "All of the ads posted so far feature disclosures that they are ads, though many followers assumed that the posts were satirical," the_Times_ reports
.
Reaction in the "meme community" has been mixed, with some followers accusing the participating influencers of selling out and "several large Instagram memers" expressing interest in getting in on the sweet Bloomberg cash. "I would be down — bread is bread," said the teenager behind the meme page @BigDadWhip. "That would be kind of dope. I could say I helped a presidential candidate." Read more at _The New York Times_.
