ABOUT THE WRITERS
The Dogtag Chronicles is about the military perspective in our own words. Here is a list of the contributors. Matt "Archie" Archibald comes from a long line of soldiers. He joined the Canadian Army Reserves at the age of 17, serving in the infantry for two years HERO’S JOURNEY HOME STEP 5: THE TURNING POINT By: Peter Sessum This is from five weeks into the Hero’s Journey Home project, a therapy program at the Seattle VA. I’m starting to see some benefits of this long term look at my military service. When I think about my entire military service, certain big issues pop out, but when examining a HERO’S JOURNEY HOME STEP 2: THE BEGINNING By: Peter Sessum There is a feeling of déjà vu as I write this because I initially started the Hero’s Journey program two years ago. Unfortunately, at the time, life got in the way. I was able to complete all 12 weeks, but I didn’t keep up on the chronicling the journey. Unfortunately, now, I BE POLITE AND RESPECTFUL, BUT HAVE A PLAN TO KILL EVERYONE By: Peter Sessum So there I was, in a small village in Kandahar Province, no shit. The California was hit by a torpedo and RANDOM MEMORY: THE POWER OF THE SHAM SHIELD By Peter Sessum A recent post on social media about the attitudes of the enlisted ranks in the Army prompted me to write this. The breakdown of ranks were pretty accurate but I thought the Specialist one was too limiting to fully capture the E-4 experience. There aretwo kinds of
WHY DOG AND PONY SHOWS SUCK: THE VETERAN PERSPECTIVE The exception to the rule. Major dog and pony shows suck, but there are times when it is kind of fun. Of course, these are instances where the time requirement is minimal. When I was part of the I Corps Color Guard we did a parade in Tacoma. We arrived a OPSEC, YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG By: Peter Sessum OPSEC, or Operations Security, is a very important thing in the military. Most people in the military have a good understanding of it, but the friends and families of military personnel often don’t get it. Most of the people that post pictures online are violating OPSEC and they don’t even know it. YOU CAN’T CHERRY PICK YOUR OATH That is a luxury that military members do not have. Unlike her oath of office, soldiers can’t pick and choose what parts of their oath of enlistment to follow. On Oct. 10, 1995, Specialist Michael New was in formation in regulation BDUs and a soft cap. He was out of uniform because he refused to wear the United Nations (U.N.) baby blue cap. THE FLAG IS MORE THAN PIECE OF CLOTH WHETHER YOU LIKE IT By Peter Sessum The American flag has been in the news a lot lately. Last month, a photographer took a picture of a baby being cradled in an American flag being held by a person in a Navy uniform and caused quite a stir, especially among the veteran THE DOGTAG CHRONICLES Every good military story starts with, “So there I wasno shit.” Usually told over a pitcher of cold beer, it is how military members and veterans connect with each other. YOU FIGHT ON YOUR TERMS BUT YOU WIN ON THEIR TERMS By: Peter Sessum Why did the U.S. win WWII? it wasn't because we coordinated with the Soviets to overrun Berlin or we dropped a couple atom bombs over Japan. That is how we fought the war, we won because both Germany and Japan surrendered. That is how it works, no matter how you fight, you only win if the enemy says THREE GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF ENLISTED LEADERSHIP By: Peter Sessum I’ll bet if you put the authors of books on military leadership in one room you would get a bunch of former field grade officers jacking each other off about how great they are. Every good military story starts with, “So there I was…no shit.” Usually told over a pitcher of cold beer, it is how military members and veterans connect with each other. It is our therapy. It is also how we remember our fallen. The more vets I talk to, the more I see what we have in common. Even across generations, so many stories are the same, just the names and the places change. No matter if it is the beaches of Normandy, the jungles of Vietnam or the sands of Iraq, there are many aspects of service that remain the same. The idea for the website was inspired by the misconceptions that people have about the military experience. Most stories in the media about the military are quoted from a few people authorized to speak to reporters and unnamed sources. The average service member is not allowed to give his or her take on the story. Now you can. This will be more than a collection of stories; it will be insights and reflections from the perspective of those that have served. The military perspective, unedited. You will not like some of it, but hopefully it will give people a better understanding of the military mindset. And if you don’t like it, no one is forcing you toread it.
