QUILTING IN THE GARDEN, 2019 9 / 30 / 199 / 30 / 19 This past weekend, I went to Livermore, California for the annual _Quilting in the Garden Quilt Show_ at Alden Lane Nursery. Every year,
I look forward to the 45 minute drive and the ensuing extravaganza of flowers, oak trees and quilts. I always bring my camera so I can share pictures with my blog readers; it’s one of my most popular blogposts of the year!
For this event, volunteers worked hard to hang over 250 beautiful quilts among the majestic oak trees that grace Alden Lane Nursery. It’s such a perfect backdrop for our quilted treasures! They also hosted a featured artist, SUE RASMUSSEN and guest artist, NANCYBROWN.
And what would a quilt show be without some fabulous vendors? I was happy to see Fig Tree Quilts’ booth was there, especially since they won’t be at PIQF (Pacific International Quilt Festival) this year. I’m usually very shy and don’t ask “famous quilters” to take a picture with me, but I did ask to have my picture taken with Joanna Figueroa, the designer behind Fig Tree & Co. I just can’t help myself when I see her fabric and her patterns. They really speak to me (and therefor I keep adding tomy Fig collection).
Fig Tree Quilt Booth Joanna Figueroa & Julie Cefalu The weather for last weekend turned out to be cooler than expected and the wind showed up in full force the first morning of the show. I MENTION THIS BECAUSE THE QUILTS WERE WAVING IN THE WIND AND SOME OF THE QUILT IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS WERE FLIPPED OR MISSING, SO I’M NOT ABLE TO PROPERLY GIVE CREDIT TO ALL OF THE QUILTS IN MY PHOTOS. Basically, we’re trying to motivate each other to get rid of some of those unfinished projects that we’ve been accumulating. Each month there’s a link up that you can enter to be eligible for thatmonth’s giveaway.
This month’s prize is sponsored by Heather at Purple Hobbies . She has created a package that includes her most popular products: the BladeSaver Thread Cutter, Magnetic
Pin Cups
, Jelly
Roll Binding Tool
,
Binding Folder Clip
,
and Pinnable Quilt Block Markers.
If you make a purchase at Purple Hobbies, Heather has offered free shipping for all of my readers with THE COUPON CODE CRAFTYQUILTER (that’s one word). Thanks, Heather, for yourgenerosity!
MY SEPTEMBER FINISHED PROJECTS Well, I did it! I finished two projects this month. The first was a quilt sample for a class I’m teaching at The Granary Quilt Shop . I’m using the pattern, Plain & Fancy , by Corey Yoder of Coriander Quilts to teach a few fun techniques for Dresden blocks and Ohio Star blocks. If you’ve seen this pattern before, you’ll notice that I’ve added a large Ohio Star block to my quilt. That was one of those “design opportunities” created by mis-cutting some fabric and ending up short one Dresden block. I think it worked out okay though! Plain & Fancy Quilt made by Julie Cefalu, pattern by Coriander Quilts I used a Layer Cake of _Little Snippets_ by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics for the Dresden blocks and a red Kona solid for the Ohio Stars. Oh, and I added corner triangles to each block so there is a secondary pattern going on where they meet. I did that just for fun – no mistakes this time! My second finish is a table runner that I started two years ago for a blog hop promoting the book, Modern Plus Sign Quilts by Cheryl Brickey and Paige Alexander. I made two table runners and this second one was a top only. So, I just had to finish the quilting and binding. I am not really happy with the quilting on this table runner. I was rushed and I didn’t baste it well enough. I used basting spray and it didn’t hold well with the type of batting I used (which was Thermolam). So, I ran into lots of tucks and excess “pillows” of fabric that had to be quilted down. It all looks better now that it’s all completed. I guess the mantra “finished is better than perfect” applies to this one. Although, I have to say that rushing a project like this produced more anxiety than relief. But it’s done, so there’s that. SEPTEMBER UFO & WIP LINK UP Now it’s your turn! I hope you were successful in finishing a project or two this month. Add a photo to the link up below and in one week I’ll randomly choose one winner to receive this month’sprize!

THE FULL PATTERN WITH 4 QUILT SIZES IS A PAID PATTERN AVAILABLE HERE.
For my block, I used fabric from _Desert Bloom_ and _The Front Porch_ both by Sherri & Chelsi of A Quilting Life for Moda Fabrics. I think I should call my block “waves of grain” instead of Ocean Waves. I love this color combination, especially with the arrival of Fall! This is such a fun block to make and super easy with the help of Triangles on a Roll . There are twelve half-square triangles in one Ocean Waves block. These are really quick to make with 2 1/2″ (finished) Half Square Triangle Paper by Triangles on a Roll. It’s very similar to foundation piecing and produces perfect HST’s every time. TIPS FOR MAKING OCEAN WAVES BLOCK I love to share tips with my fellow quilters. If you’ve never used Triangle Paper before, it’s fairly simple. Depending on the version you have, they’ll be divided into sections and you need to determine how many you’ll need for the project. For this block, I needed a total of 12 HST’s, so I cut a section that included six squares (each square makes 2). I cut my fabric 1/2″- 1″ bigger than thatsection of paper.
* Layer your fabric right sides together and place the Triangle Paper on top, centered. Pin it around the edges to keep it in place. * TIP: SET YOUR STITCH LENGTH TO 1.5 – 1.8. THIS WILL HELP PERFORATE THE PAPER AND MAKE IT EASIER TO REMOVE. * Stitch exactly on the dashed lines in one continuous line (ifpossible).
* Cut apart on the SOLID lines and tear the paper away. * Press the HST’s open or to the side. I pressed mine toward thedarker fabric.
* Snip off the little “bunny ears” or tips. You should have a perfectly sized HST. TIP: For this block, there are lots of diagonal seams that need to line up. I love using a “setting pin” to make those seams meet perfectly. You can read more about setting pins in my Pinwheel StarBlock Tutorial
or check out my 8 Tips to Create a Perfect Quilt Block.
Perfectly
aligned diagonal seams I made one Ocean Waves quilt block (so far), and I love how it looks. This one measures 10 1/2″ unfinished. It’s a beautiful block all by itself, but when you put a bunch together it turns into a spectacular quilt. HAPPY FALL!
9 / 23 / 199 / 23 / 19 Today is the first day of Fall! I love this time of year. It must be time for a pumpkin spice latte! I’ve already got the Fall decorations out, and I just finished the cutest little mug rug inspired by the season. I’ll give you a quick tutorial on how tomake one next week!
I was able to spend most of Sunday in my sewing room. It was such a treat to work on a few small projects, just because. I even got most of the quilting completed on my UFO for this month. One of my favorite patterns that I’ve designed is the Patchwork Pumpkins Wall Hanging.
If you’re interested, you can purchase the pattern in my Etsy shop.
It contains 11 pages of instructions and includes raw edge applique and turned edge applique with plenty of photos to help you along. That’s it for now. I hope you’re having a great Monday, and I’ll be back on Thursday for a Fat Quarter Shop Sew Along!10 Comments

WHAT IS THE PERFECT SEWING MACHINE? 9 / 18 / 199 / 18 / 19 Does the perfect sewing machine even exist? I know this is a hot topic for anyone who is a quilter or sewist. A good sewing machine is often one of the most expensive tools we own and the most important tool in the sewing room. Today, I’m going to give you _The Perfect Sewing Machine Checklist _(speaking from a quilter’s point of view). I’m on the hunt for the perfect sewing machine. And I’m not sure it’s out there, so I thought I would chat with all of you about it. While I was writing this blog post, I began to imagine what my DREAM sewing machine would look like and thus, _The Perfect Sewing Machine Checklist_ was born! But first, let me tell you about my current sewing machines and why I’m searching for something else.MY SEWING MACHINES
I currently own FIVE sewing machines. I HAVE A BERNINA 770QE AND A BERNINA 440QE. I still love my Bernina 440, but I upgraded to the 770 when I wanted a larger throat (harp) space, but I couldn’t part withmy original 440.
My Bernina 770QE
I thought I had found the perfect machine when I bought my Bernina 770QE in 2015 (I paid $5,000). This is a great, high-end sewing machine that has a lot of power and potential. It has integrated dual feed (IDF), a larger bobbin capacity, a stitch regulator for free motion quilting (that I don’t use) and lots of other features that I appreciate. It creates a beautiful stitch and it can handle thick seam intersections and just about anything else I “feed” it. I LOVE that I can change the settings on any stitch to any length and width I want. I can get a blanket stitch or zig zag stitch to the exact size I need with no limitations imposed. I don’t know of many machines that allow you to do that. It also has a fantastic walking foot and it’s so easy to change to a different foot when needed. However, my particular machine turns out to be quite temperamental. It has an upper thread sensor that intermittently tells me my thread is broken when it’s not (and it won’t let me continue sewing until I re-thread the machine). I recently discovered that you can turn off the upper thread sensor which is a simple fix. I also had to replace the mother board; fortunately it was still under partial warranty. I ALSO OWN A JUKI TL 2010Q. I bought this sewing machine for $800 in 2013 (I think) specifically for free motion quilting. It’s a solid, mechanical, straight-stitch only machine. It’s also great for piecing. I have it set up in my sewing room as a second machine so that I can have two “jobs” going on at the same time. In other words, I can use one machine for piecing and have the other one set up for quilting. It feels so luxurious to have that ability! The drawback is that I can’t use it for machine applique or anything that requires the needle position to move.Juki TL 2010Q
I HAVE AN EVERSEWN SPARROW 25 (no picture) that I use for my class machine. It’s lightweight and portable, so I can take it to and from the quilt shop I teach at. It’s a great little machine for the price (I paid $360 in 2017) and it has served me well. Even so, I might upgrade this machine soon to one that has more built-in features. MY LAST MACHINE IS A SINGER 401A that belonged to my mom. This is the sewing machine that I learned to sew on in seventh grade. My parents gave it to me six years ago, and it lovingly sits in my grandmother’s original sewing cabinet which is now located in my sewing room. I have more of an emotional attachment to this machine. I know it can still stitch beautifully and I should use it once in awhile. Some day.
My Singer 401A
With all of these sewing machines at my disposal, what more could I be looking for? The industry leaders are taking advantage of new technologies and I’m completely enthralled with THE LASER GUIDE BEAM. I’ve only seen this on the Babylock Crescendo , but I believe it’s available on other brands and models. This guide beam can be used in place of drawing diagonal lines for HST’s and stitch and flip squares. It can also be moved to create a specific seam allowance or to guide a seam for other purposes. I feel like I would use this function ALL the time. I know you can buy a separate guide beam and attach it to any sewing machine, but it seems like it wouldn’t be as precise or adjustable. The Crescendo also has a sensor pen that can be used to tell your machine exactly where you want your needle and stitches positioned and where to stop. This would be really useful for machine applique. I also like that it has a manual presser foot lever as well as an automatic pivot function. I’ve never owned a Babylock machine before, but I’ve heard good things about them. I recently test drove one and I liked how it performed. This is NOT a sponsored blog post,by the way.
My perfect sewing machine includes a sweet granddaughter (2017) So…. I’m not sure that I’m willing to give up some of the things I love about my Bernina for any of the new features of a different machine (especially that guide beam). I can’t sneak add another machine into my sewing room, so I would have to give up something. Somebody really needs to come up with the perfect sewing machine thathas it all.
THE PERFECT SEWING MACHINE CHECK LIST In my opinion, the perfect sewing machine (for quilters) would have the following features: * LARGE THROAT (HARP) SPACE* GUIDE BEAM
* LARGE BOBBIN CAPACITY * SEPARATE BOBBIN WINDER * AUTOMATIC THREAD CUTTER * AUTOMATIC NEEDLE THREADER* AUTOMATIC TENSION
* KNEE LIFT OR HANDS-FREE PRESSER FOOT CAPABILITY* NEEDLE UP/DOWN
* SPEED CONTROL DIAL * INTEGRATED DUAL FEED SYSTEM * EXCELLENT WALKING FOOT IN ADDITION TO IDF (ABOVE) * INTUITIVE OPERATING SYSTEM (EASE OF USE) * EXCELLENT STITCH QUALITY* POWERFUL MOTOR
* NO LIMITS TO STITCH LENGTH AND WIDTH SETTINGS * A VARIETY OF BLANKET STITCHES (I LOVE TO APPLIQUE) * MIRROR IMAGING CAPABILITY* EXTENSION TABLE
* GOOD LIGHTING
* STITCH REGULATOR FOR FREE MOTION QUILTING * EASY TO USE BOBBIN SYSTEM * ABILITY TO ADJUST THE PRESSURE OF THE PRESSER FOOT * AFFORDABLE PRICE TAG (SINCE I’M DREAMING) I’m sure I didn’t think of everything. What would you add to the list? Do you have a sewing machine that you love? Please share in the comments so we can all learn from each other.
