HISTORIC SIRES
Foundation Sires focuses on the early stallions that shaped the thoroughbred breed. There is a chronology of the earliest known and imported Oriental stallions; an alphabetized index of early stallions, and an illustrated alphabetized description of 17th to 19th century foundation sires, each of which has his own biography. Leading Sires is a series of charts providing a chronologic listing of FAMILY NUMBERS EXPLAINED The Family Numbers commonly used to designate the various Thoroughbred female families were popularized by Bruce Lowe, an Australian pedigree researcher at the end of the nineteenth century. Lowe's work, Breeding Horses by the Figure System was published posthumously in 1895 by his friend and editor, William Allison. GRAND NATIONAL WINNERS Although 1839 is commonly accepted as the first running of the Grand National Steeplechase, with Lottery as the first winner, the first race recognizable as the GRAVE MATTERS FARAWAY FARM FARAWAY FARM was purchased in the mid-1920s by Samuel Riddle as a permanent home for his champion runner MAN O'WAR, his broodmare band and other stallions.The farm also was home to the horses owned by Riddle's niece and nephew-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter M.
