STUDY TOOLS
Study Tools. Much of my current teaching is based on readings of classical Buddhist texts in Pali. Over the past years I have been compiling The Pali Canon: Source Texts for Secular Buddhism . This is an ongoing project, the most recent version of which can be downloadedas a PDF file.
THE ART OF MEDITATION The Art of Meditation. Meditation can be practised in two main ways: either by stopping and cultivating concentration and enquiry in a systematic way using the tools of awareness: breath, sensations, sounds, thoughts and meditative questioning; or by paying attention to life moment to moment without grasping as we go about our days.CREATIVE AWARENESS
Creative Awareness. At the root of creative awareness is acceptance. You become aware, conscious of all that constitute you: good qualities, negative tendencies, skills, limitations. You become able to appreciate and recognise your positive aspects: your kindness, your humor, your intelligence, your joyful or reflective nature, yourability to
DEMOCRACY OF THE IMAGINATION A Democracy of the Imagination. ERNEST HEMINGWAY spoke once of sitting at his desk each morning to face "the horror of a blank sheet of paper." He found himself (as any writer can confirm) having to produce by the end of the day a series of words arranged in a way that has never before been imagined. Stephen and Martine Batchelor are Buddhist teachers and authors, who live in South West France and conduct meditation retreats and seminars worldwide. They both trained as monastics for ten years in traditional Buddhist centers in Asia, and now present a lay and secular approach to Buddhist practice, largely based on the early teachings of the Buddha as found in the Pali Canon. This website includes written, audio, photographic and video materials that offer a broad introduction to their work. In addition, it provides their public teaching schedule, which we seek to keep as up-to-date as possible. A contact email address is also supplied, and we welcome enquiries. While most of the information is in English, a French language section presents a number of transcribed talks, as well as a link to Terre d’Eveil, the Buddhist group in Paris for whom they serve as guidingteachers.
