STATEMENT SIGNED BY POLITICIANS & CAMPAIGNERS DEMANDS URGENT ADOPTION OF A ZERO-COVID STRATEGY & PUBLIC INQUIRY ON COVID BAME IMPACTNovember 20, 2020
standuptorac
PRESS RELEASE… _FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE_ POLITICIANS, CAMPAIGNERS & TRADE UNION LEADERS DEMAND THE URGENT ADOPTION OF A ZERO-COVID STRATEGY AND A PUBLIC INQUIRY ON COVID-19BAME IMPACT
A statement calling for urgent action on the disproportionate impact of COVID19 on BAME Communities has been released today, signed by over 40 MPs, Trade Union leaders, campaigners and communityrepresentatives.
Pointing to the fact “_Recent figures show 38.3 percent of Covid patients admitted to intensive care in the second wave have been from BAME backgrounds despite making up around 15 per cent of the total population,_” the statement calls for a public inquiry into disproportionate impact, a range of measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and the adoption of a ‘Zero Covid strategy’ to prevent future waves of the virus on the scale we are currently seeing. The statement also condemns “_the whipping up of racism towards BAME communities and refugees to scapegoat and distract from the government’s failed response to the virus and its dire economic ramifications,_” and calls for the removal of barriers to healthcare and pay support for migrants which have exacerbated suffering duringthe pandemic.
Due to the urgency of the situation, the statement also supports “_the call for schools and colleges to close and for universities to move online during the national lockdown” _in order to bring down infections to a point where the lockdown could safely be lifted, alongside _“Immediate action to create a functioning test, track and trace system with funding given to local NHS public healthteams._”
Demands are also made for “_proper financial support for communities including furlough to continue as long as necessary, more support for the self-employed and small businesses, and funding for schools, colleges and universities to support home learning_.” Signatories to the letter include MPs and peers from 3 parties including MPs Diane Abbott, Kate Osamor, Dawn Butler, Chris Stephens (SNP), Liz Saville-Roberts (Plaid Cymru), Labour Peer Peter Hain, trade union General Secretaries including Unite the Union’s Len McCluskey, representatives of campaign groups including Stand Up To Racism, Muslim Engagement & Development (MEND) and We Own It, as well as faith and community representatives. SABBY DHALU, Stand up to Racism Co-Convenor said: _“Despite the Black Lives Matter movement and the range of research into the disproportionate impact of Covid19 on BAME communities, and how other countries have eradicated Covid19, here the virus is spiralling out of control and still disproportionately impacting BAME communities. No progress has been made by the government to address institutional racism and the range of factors causing this. We demand immediate action: zero covid – a strategy to eliminate the coronavirus, as successfully implemented in many other countries, and a public inquiry like the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry into why BAME communities have been disproportionately impacted.” _ WEYMAN BENNETT, Stand Up To Racism Co-Convenor said: _“Disproportionate deaths of the black community is consequence of racism and deliberate negligence. Over 50,000 have died in the UK according to official government statistics, with the actual figure likely to be far higher. It is said that the dead have no tongues so the living must speak for them and demand justice. We want a full and open enquiry into disproportionate deaths and no cover-up. We will not rest until we get this “__Notes to Editors:_

ACTION ON COVID DISPROPORTIONATE IMPACT – WE NEED A PUBLIC INQUIRY &ZERO COVID STRATEGY

CLICK HERE TO ADD YOUR NAME STATEMENT CALLING FOR INQUIRY INTO DISPROPORTIONATE BAME IMPACT &ZERO-COVID STRATEGY
We note with grave concern that despite the Black Lives Matter movement, COVID-19 continues to have a disproportionate impact on Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities. Recent figures show 38.3% of Covid patients admitted to intensive care in the second wave have been from BAME backgrounds despite making up around 15% of the total population. A report into economic impact found 8% of BAME British and 10 percent of BAME migrant communities lost their job since the start of the COVID crisis, compared to only 3.3% of the white non migrant communities. BAME British communities were also 40% less likely than white British communities to benefit from employee protection such asfurlough.
We condemn the whipping up of racism towards BAME communities and refugees to scapegoat and distract from the government’s failed response to the virus and its dire economic ramifications. This has led to an increase in racist attacks. Racially motivated offences accounted for three quarters of all hate crimes and increased by 4,000in 2019-20.
In the UK in cumulative deaths per capita continues to be the worst of any major country and the 19.8 per cent GDP slump in the second quarter was worse than any other major economy. We must reverse the alarming rise in coronavirus deaths, infections, and the economic slump. The only effective solution is for the government to aim for the elimination of the coronavirus – Zero Covid. This policy has been endorsed by the British Medical Association, Independent SAGE and others. Only then can we effectively restart the economy. We strongly support the call for schools and colleges to close and for universities to move online during the national lockdown. We call for:
* A public inquiry into the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 onBAME communities.
* The implementation of measures outlined in the Runnymede Trust / IPPR report on ethnic disparities including isolation pay support for those with no recourse to public funds and an end to NHS charging under the hostile environment. * Immediate action to create a functioning test, track and trace system with funding given to local NHS public health teams. The national lockdown to include the physical closure of schools, colleges and universities until deaths and infections have significantly reduced. * Proper financial support for communities including furlough to continue as long as necessary, more support for the self-employed and small businesses, and funding for schools, colleges and universities to support home learning.SIGNED BY

SUPPORT STAND UP TO RACISM CARE4CALAIS WINTER APPEALNovember 15, 2020
standuptorac
FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS, THE SUTR APPEAL HAS BEEN CRITICAL TO GETTING REFUGEES THROUGH THE COLD WINTER MONTHS. THIS YEAR WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT MORE THAN EVER. Hundreds of refugees remain trapped at the border in Calais, Dunkirk and Belgium. There have been police raids on their settlements year-round, with harsh evictions taking place almost every day in the autumn. Tents have been taken or destroyed. Places where they slept have been fenced off. A cruel food ban also came into force in Calais which stopped volunteers from giving out meals in key streets. Refugees have been forced to use dangerous routes at the hands of ruthless smugglers to get to Britain and make the asylum claims to which they are legally entitled. At least 6 people died at sea thisyear.
Those who get to the UK are treated no better. At least four asylum-seekers died in UK accommodation this year. The government also started using military barracks to house refugees, with reports describing the barracks in Kent as cramped and unsanitary. The Home Office has tried deporting as many vulnerable refugees as it can in charter flights to other countries. There, people are left homeless with no access to help. Lawyers have been doing good work to stop many of these deportations, but they face repeated public attacks from the government. Winter has come and the refugees once again face months in cold, rain and snow with no permanent shelter. This is the hostile environment governments want to create. Don’t let the refugees freeze this winter. Your donations help Care4Calais supply tents, tarps, sleeping bags and blankets, as well as boots and warm clothing. They can pay for hot drinks and the daily services refugees need to survive, as well as support them once theyget to the UK.
Financial donations are most useful. These mean Care4Calais can buy the supplies they need, when they need them. They also keep the vehicles on the road for distributions and keep the warehouse running.DONATE

ISLAMOPHOBIA AWARENESS MONTH #IAM2020November 3, 2020
standuptorac
Omar Begg (Mend) explains institutional Islamophobia & how the Prevent framework targets the Muslim community November is Islamophobia Awareness Month, and events will be taking place across the country to draw attention to the rise in Islamophobic hate crime, the targeting of Muslim communities by governments & the media, and the positive contribution made by Muslim communities. Stand Up To Racism is supporting #IAM2020 as a partner both nationally, and through local groups putting on events with Muslim organisations such as MEND to bring communities together to discuss the impact of Islamophobia.*
In 2019/20, where the perceived religion of the victim was recorded, half (50%) of religious hate crime offences were targeted against Muslims (3,089 offences) Islamophobia has been a key plank of Government racism, through the discriminatory and counterproductive Prevent agenda, and outbursts such as Boris Johnson’s on the niqab contributing to the continuing rise in hate crime against Muslims. The Government has also disgracefully attempted to blame Muslim communities for the rise in COVID cases to distrace from its own disastrous failings. This pattern has been repeated across Europe and North America. In France Macron has made an appalling attack on the Muslim population, painting Muslims as “extremists” and threatening to dissolve over 50 charities – including the Collective Against Islamophobia in France (CCIF) for being “enemies of the Republic”. Donald Trump constantly used Islamophobia and anti refugee and migrant racism throughout his presidency, from the ‘Muslim Ban’ in his first year to tweeting comments such as “Islam hates us”. #IAM2020 is a chance to bring together communities, campaigns and anti-racists to discuss these issues and how we can unite to challengeIslamophobia.
