Dining Room GREAT ROOM | SPENCER HOUSE Intended as a setting for receptions, balls and also as a picture gallery this is the largest and most imposing of the State Rooms at Spencer House. The central compartment of the ceiling is similar to Stuart’s design in the chapel at Greenwich, with three shallow domes. The coffering and the frieze are derived from the Temple ofConcord and

The Entrance Hall at Spencer House follows this pattern but here this dignified vestibulum immediately introduces the visitor to the Roman splendour of Vardy’s architecture. The Doric frieze with swags, sacrificial instruments and bucrania is derived from the Temple of Jupiter the Thunderer and the oval classical relief, representingAntinous
LADY SPENCER’S ROOM This is the private drawing room where Lady Spencer received her guests. The ceiling is one of Stuart’s best designs, based on a ceiling in the Baths of Augustus in Rome, while the frieze is adapted from that of the Erechtheum in Athens.THE RESTORED GARDEN
Opening hours. The House is open every Sunday (except during August) from 10.30am – 4.30pm (last tour). Access is by guided tour, which lasts approximately 1 hour. Plan your visit. ANTE ROOM | SPENCER HOUSE The Spencer House Ante Room was originally called the Little Eating Parlour. It was used by the Spencers as their own private dining room when the House was built but now owes its name and function to the alterations made by Henry Holland for the Second Earl in the 1790s. MUSIC ROOM | SPENCER HOUSE Music Room This comparatively restrained room is a modest overture to Stuart’s State Rooms which follow. The plaster frieze ornamented with urns is similar to that in the dining room at Lichfield House in St. James’s Square, also designed by Stuart.MORNING ROOM

Staircase Hall Here the work of Vardy meets that of James ‘Athenian’ Stuart. It was used by the Spencers as their own private dining room when the House was built but now owes its name and function to the alterations made by Henry Holland for the Second Earl in the 1790s. Aristocratic mansions such as Spencer House played a vital role amongst fashionable London society. On calling too often at Spencer House, the actor David Garrick (1717-1779) thought he should apologise to Countess Spencer: 'As your ladyship has had for some time too much of my company I will keep from St. James’s Place as long as Ipossibly can'.

BUILDING SPENCER HOUSE Building Spencer House (1756-66) John Spencer initially employed the Palladian architect John Vardy, a pupil of William Kent. Vardy was responsible for the external elevations of Spencer House and the design of the ground floor rooms including some of the furniture. MUSIC ROOM | SMALLER MEETINGS | SPENCER HOUSE While guests will often pause here for a short while before flowing through into the spacious reception venues of Lady Spencer’s Room and the Great Room, the tranquil Music Room is though ideal for smaller meetings or alternatively serves as a useful outmess area for larger corporate and private events.ENTRANCE HALL
The Entrance Hall at Spencer House follows this pattern but here this dignified vestibulum immediately introduces the visitor to the Roman splendour of Vardy’s architecture. Morning Room. This well proportioned room with a coved ceiling and plaster and timber wall panels was originally called the ‘Anty Room’ in Vardy’s original plans. Staircase Hall Here the work of Vardy meets that of James ‘Athenian’ Stuart.
