OUR COUNTY BY LYNDA HOPKINS - 5TH DISTRICT SUPERVISOR - MAY 2020 Stretching our limited dollars as far as possible to help the community during the Coronavirus Public Health Emergency. We have funded Food support for community, including local businesses that grow, prepare, and deliver food. We also provided funds for Workers that don’t qualify for standard support, undocumented workers and artists. Very Crucial is our funds for Mental health services and showers for youth and homeless. Other Funds were also alloted for Small Business Support and more. The county has spread available funds across as many organizations as it could, and all asked for more than we were able to provide. EVICTION BAN DEMYSTIFIED: RESOURCES FOR LANDLORDS & TENANTS California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a COVID-19 Eviction Defense Ordinance formally referred to as Executive Order N-28-20. While the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors agreed with Gov. Newsom’s executive order last month to limit residential tenants from evictions due to economic impact of COVID-19, his gubernatorial power is limited. Then the Judicial Council issued its sweeping order. With the current landscape now is an important time for both landlords and tenants to understand their options. Some think it might be wise for property owners/landlords to reach out to tenants to understand their position to stay ahead of any concerns. get skinny here with resourcesto help you.

CLOSING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE IN SONOMA COUNTY With the arrival of the pandemic, School systems across Sonoma County — and across the country — have faced an unprecedented challenge: pivoting from a regular school year to at-home learning with only a few days to prepare. Unfortunately, despite the offers of local wireless providers to make internet service low-cost or free, as well as the efforts of local agencies such as the Sonoma County Office of Education to help families take advantage of these offers, many of our rural communities simply do not have the network coverage needed to get online. In Sonoma County, the issue of internet access disproportionately affects our rural/remote districts. Students in districts like HORICON , TWO ROCK , and WEST SONOMA COUNTY UNION HIGH SCHOOL District are often unable to access online curricular materials and academic support resources. Plese contact the superintendents of the districts affected and let them know how you are affected.Read story
COVID-19 AND IMMIGRANTS ON THE FRONT LINES Our nation’s hospitals and other health care facilities have long relied on immigrants to fill the role of doctors, nurses, EMT workers, and medical technicians. Now they are serving their adopted country when it is a particularly dangerous time to be caring for our sick. As of April 2nd, the CDC has reported that 9,282 health care workers have contracted COVID-19, 723 have been hospitalized and 27 have died. Surely those numbers will continue to climb. Still they serve.Read story

THE RISING NEED FOR TELEHEALTH: CORONAVIRUS - REDEFINING AMERICANHEALTHCARE
By March 11th, less than two months from the first reported cases, the WHO declared a global pandemic. On that day, there were 118,000 confirmed cases. As of March 27, 2020; there are over half a million cases. The question at hand stands to be, how do the already medically frail population of our nation get the healthcare they need without being exposed to the symptomatic and the asymptomatic? Telemedicine. Where technology and medicine meet miraculously just in time. The risk of exposure to COVID-19 and any other communicable illnesses is eliminated, and their outcomes increase in quality partially because the patient becomes more involved with their own care and treatment. Additionally, providers can protect themselves and their staff as well.Read story

COVID-19, PROTESTING AND UNITY — BRIDGING THE GAP FOR COMMON GROUND- OP-ED
We are seeing a movement of fellow citizens rise up to voice their concern about quarantine laws. My background is public health, I didn’t go the epidemiology route, I chose health policy, but I still have some classes in my memory bank about infectious disease control and disaster preparedness. Additionally, I love protesting. And here I am watching these two worlds collide. I have enough trust in the medical field and disease experts from around the world to agree we need some restrictions to flatten the curve. I do agree there is a limit to the restrictions, my limits are just different than theirs. As a citizen who is also afraid the government has too much control at times, yes, I get why they’re protesting.Read story

CORONAVIRUS/COVID-19 SONOMA COUNTY HEALTH CENTERS CARE RESOURCES Sonoma County Community Health Centers are dedicated to providing outstanding health care to everyone – whoever they are, whatever is going on with them, including their ability to pay. Right now, we are waiving our sliding scale fees for those who are uninsured, knowing the financial challenge so many people are facing. It’s also important to remind the community that we don’t ask about immigration status and don’t report any info like that. Our mission is to get people the care they need so they can be healthy. At the national level they have also issued exceptions to the current public-charge rule to support people getting care and it not being a barrier to any public-charge determination.Read story
