THE NETWORK APPROACH TO SOCIAL CHANGE The network approach to social change involves taking a big step back from the work you have always done. It requires asking a much larger set of questions. And having the faith, confidence and leadership to plug into the network for social change. Photo Credit: Wikimedia. Reader Interactions. WHAT'S YOUR NONPROFIT'S THEORY OF CHANGE? A Theory of Change can strengthen your nonprofit in many ways: Guides your strategic planning process. Nonprofit leaders who want to plan for the future must first articulate what it is they need to decide about that future. A strategic question is a big picture, two roads diverged in the woods kind of question. 3 QUESTIONS TO GET YOUR NONPROFIT BOARD ENGAGED I know how hard nonprofit leaders struggle to get their board of directors active, engaged, involved, motivated, moving forward with their nonprofit organization. So today I want to give you three questions that can get your board engaged and invested in the work ofyour organization.
WHY YOUR BOARD SHOULD RAISE 10% OF YOUR NONPROFIT'S BUDGET It’s no secret that nonprofits struggle with money. In fact, the Nonprofit Finance Fund’s most recent State of the Nonprofit Sector Survey found that 41% of nonprofit respondents ran a deficit in 2012. If we really want to rewrite this rule for the nonprofit sector, we need to make some pretty big changes. WHAT IS NONPROFIT SUSTAINABILITY? Others define “nonprofit sustainability” as the ability to attract multi-year, unrestricted funding. While that would be a positive step, foundations are largely the only nonprofit funding source able or willing to make unrestricted, multi-year commitments. Government funding is never unrestricted, and individuals rarely make multi-year WHAT'S YOUR NONPROFIT'S THEORY OF CHANGE? An inability to “move the needle” on a social problem. A disconnected, disengaged, ineffective board of directors. Lack of sufficient organization infrastructure. In my mind, the solution is so simple. If every nonprofit had 4 key things in place, those problemswould go away.
DESIGN A THEORY OF CHANGE TO ARTICULATE THE VALUE THAT YOU A Theory of Change is an incredible tool for helping a nonprofit articulate what value they provide the community. And once you have articulated that value, a Theory of Change is a jumping off point to: Chart a strategic direction, which guides the action of the organization and focuses limited resources. THE RIGHT QUESTIONS TO ASK A POTENTIAL BOARD MEMBER Recently, fundraising maven Kay Sprinkel Grace wrote a post on the GuideStar blog outlining four questions to ask potential board members when interviewing them for board positions. While I heartily agree with her that nonprofit leaders should institute and follow a rigorous due diligence process in recruiting new board members (rather than just shoving anyone into an empty board seat), I 4 TIMES WHEN A NONPROFIT NEEDS A STRATEGIC PLAN Call me biased, but I think most nonprofits should have a strategic plan, and I mean a good strategic plan, not a bad one.But many don’t. And I get it, sometimes a nonprofit simply doesn’t have the time, energy or resources to devote to a good strategic planningprocess.
THE DANGER OF THE NONPROFIT SAVIOR COMPLEX The Danger of the Nonprofit Savior Complex. You know the Nonprofit Savior Complex, I know you do. It’s when a nonprofit leader begins to believe that she (and only she) cares enough, knows enough, or is enough to fix the massive problem she cares so deeply about. The positive side to the Savior Complex is it compels people who see an DON'T CHEAT US OF YOUR CONTRIBUTION I’ve been thinking about creativity a lot lately. WHAT SOCIAL VELOCITY CLIENTS SAY*
As a start up nonprofit, one of the most critical actions we've taken was to hire Nell and Social Velocity to help us ask difficult, introspective questions about who we are, where we are going, and our place in the market of ideas. We would not be where we are today without her advice and guidance - she's amazing. She is highly capable of addressing all the elements of how to think through truly hard questions - even when you don't know where to begin or feel like you can't get through the process. PHILIP REINER, CEO, TECHNOLOGY FOR GLOBAL SECURITY*
As a new entity, we had been doing more of the day-to-day work and hadn’t taken the time to think about the bigger picture of where the Engaging News Project was headed and how to get there. Social Velocity helped us to chart a future direction, hone our messaging, and develop a clear plan for our organization. By working with us to figure out our targets, potential collaborators, and goals, Social Velocity helped us to systematically figure out a strong path forward. I can’t wait to see what we’ll be able to accomplish with theseplans in place.
TALIA STROUD, DIRECTOR OF THE ENGAGING NEWS PROJECT (NOW THE CENTER FOR MEDIA ENGAGEMENT)*
The strategic planning process opened everyone’s eyes. We now have buy-in from our most important stakeholders in the organization – the board – for change. We realized that in order to achieve growth, we have to change internally. Nell helped us to navigate the road to becoming a national organization by changing how we operate internally. Nell’s experience in nonprofit management and fundraising proved to be invaluable in our planning process. Our work with Social Velocity has been critical to developing a viable growth strategy and plan for ACE. The process helped us clarify our core competencies, engage stakeholders, and articulate exactly how and why ACE should grow. As a result of Social Velocity’s strategic planning and follow-up coaching, my staff and I, and our advisory board, have the tools and confidence to reach our larger vision for ACE. This was one of the best investments we have made in ACE! MARY ELLEN ISAACS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF LITERACY FIRST1
