SIKORSKY ARCHIVES
The mission of the Igor I. Sikorsky Historical Archives is to acquire, manage,protect and make accessible to qualified persons for research and educational purposes, historical documents and memorabilia associated with Igor I. Sikorsky, his life and his careers in aviation, and the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, as well as relatedpredecessor
SIKORSKY ARCHIVES
The VS-300, in point of time, actually dates back to 1929 when Mr. Sikorsky concluded that a successful helicopter soon would be possible. In 1931 he applied for a helicopter patent that incorporated most of the features of the VS-300. There was one main lifting screw and a small auxiliary rotor at the rear of the fuselage to counteracttorque.

To prove to the Navy the usefulness of the helicopter, Sikorsky sent an S-51 helicopter in 1947 to sea with Task Force 2 with 2 pilots and 2 crew chiefs. The first military rescue by a helicopter was accomplished on February 9, 1947 by a Sikorsky S-51 helicopter flown by Sikorsky chief pilot Jimmy Viner assisted by LT Joe Rullo, USN.SIKORSKY ARCHIVES
Stories of helicopter rescues increased as the helicopter matured and Mr. Sikorsky started the tradition of presenting the "Winged-S Rescue Award" to each aircrew member. When asked about these rescue mission aircrew's performance, Sikorsky responded: "I personally would like to express my deepest respect and admiration for these gallant pilotsSIKORSKY ARCHIVES
The S-55 helicopter was a giant step forward for Sikorsky helicopter designs and with its 10 passenger capacity and the 2,000 pound external lift capacity was a true transport helicopter. The Air Force deployed a YH-19 helicopter to Korea in March 1951 for evaluation and the day after arrival it assisted in evacuating paratroops.SIKORSKY ARCHIVES

Sikorsky built five prototype S-92s, one for ground testing and four flight test aircraft. #1 aircraft, the ground test vehicle, was scheduled for 350 hours including 200 hours to certify the main gearbox. #2 aircraft, the first flight aircraft, was scheduled for 340hours of flying.

The Sikorsky model designation for the HSS-2 (SH-3A) is the S-61. Since 1959, Sikorsky Aircraft has produced 794 aircraft based on the original S-61. S-70 : U.S. Army UH-60L Black Hawk, UH-60Q DUSTOFF, MH-6. U.S. Air Force MH-60G/HH-60G Pave Hawk. Background. The U.S. Army and Sikorsky Aircraft began development of the UH-60L model during 1987 to replace the “A” model whose performance capabilities were declining as a result of weight growth. The configuration features described for the S-70 YUH-60A UTTAS were all applicable to the UH-70A Black Hawk. Its titanium main rotor blades, elastomeric main rotor head, and two-position raised rotor were all part of the UH-60A configuration. Similarly, the canted cross-beam tail rotor and stabilator design continued to be part ofthe Black Hawk.

On November 29, 1945, a Sikorsky R-5 hovers over a grounded oil barge in Long Island Sound off Fairfield, CT, to perform the first helicopter hoist rescues in aviation history. The S-56 helicopters featured a 68 foot (later increased to 72 foot) 5 bladed fully articulated main rotor and a 4 bladed tail rotor powered by the Pratt and Whitney Double Wasp R-2800-50, 1,900 hp (later R-2800-54, 2,100 hp), 18 cylinder, twin row, air cooled radial engine.
