Tallawit Timbouctou are champions of takamba, a hypnotic traditional music from Northern Mali. Built around the tehardent, the four-stringed lute and pre-cursor to the American banjo, takamba’s droning distortion comes from signature handmade mics and blown out amplifiers. Accompanied by percussion pounded out onto an overturned calabash with mind boggling time signatures, the combined LES FILLES DE ILLIGHADAD Les Filles de Illighadad come from a secluded commune in central Niger, far off in the scrubland deserts at the edge of the Sahara. The village is only accessible via a grueling drive through the open desert, but what the nomadic zone lacks in material wealth it makes up for deep and strong identity and tradition.ETRAN DE L'AÏR
The name Etran de L’Aïr translates to “the Stars of the Aïr,” the mountainous region of Northern Niger. They are based in the town of Agadez, an urban center of the desert, and a city reknowned for the production of music – in particular the electric guitar and the so-called “desert blues,” popularized as late by bands such as Mdou Moctar and Bombino. LES FILLES DE ILLIGHADAD Future Tuareg music from the female led avant-rock group Les Filles de Illighadad. Mixing traditional percussion with electric guitars, Les Filles brings ancient village folk music into the modern era. Drawing on traditional tende music, the forgotten inspiration of Tuareg guitar, Fatou and Les Filles breath new life iTUAREG DRONE
Isswat is the real music of the desert. The record is available now from the shop or via bandcamp – a collaboration w/ Mississippi Records. We’ve made 500 of them with handmade covers, a homage to the some of the motifs of Tuareg design. Below is a video of Idassane Wallet Mohamed performing. Currently, she is near the border ofAlgeria.
MAMMANE AND HIS ELECTRONIC ORGAN Mammane was captivated by the sound and convinced him to sell it. “It was possibly the first Organ in Niger,” he explained. He began to compose songs on the organ. Many of these songs were interpretations of Niger folkloric classics. “I wanted to make the Wodaabe songs on the keyboard, make the Tuareg tendé with therhythm,” he said.

It is physically very similar to many of the other versions of the “tradi-guitar” in West Africa (hoddu, xalam, tidnit, terhadant, ngoni), but for it’s minimal design – a calabash, covered in goat skins, and boasting only two strings. A STORY OF SAHEL SOUNDS A few years back, the filmmakers reached out about a project to document the work of Sahel Sounds. Over the past 3 years, the film team joined us on some of the first European tours with Mamman Sani and Mdou Moctar, came along to Niger on a month long recording trip, and visited us at home in rainy Cascadia, worlds away from the Sahel. TAKAMBA - SAHEL SOUNDS Agali Ag Amoumine see previously, with an album recorded by sahelsounds in 2009 — a raw session of hypnotic takamba, the traditional tuareg and sonrai music: Agali on the electrified tehardent accompanied by Alhassane Maiga on calabash. Built around the tehardent, the four-stringed lute and pre-cursor to the American banjo, takamba’s droning distortion comes from signature handmade mics and blown out amplifiers. Accompanied by percussion pounded out onto an overturned calabash with mind boggling time signatures, the combined LES FILLES DE ILLIGHADAD Les Filles de Illighadad come from a secluded commune in central Niger, far off in the scrubland deserts at the edge of the Sahara. The village is only accessible via a grueling drive through the open desert, but what the nomadic zone lacks in material wealth it makes up for deep and strong identity and tradition. The name Etran de L’Aïr translates to “the Stars of the Aïr,” the mountainous region of Northern Niger.
