USING DIGITAL STORIES TO FIGHT INSTITUTIONALISM IN NURSING Using digital stories to fight institutionalism in nursing homes. After I complete my RJI Fellowship I want to test digital storytelling in the context of long-term care. These stories would be about nursing home residents, ideally written by journalism organizations, with the goal of improving care or interaction between residents and staff. THE SECRETS OF SUCCESSFUL NEWSLETTERS From subject lines to welcome campaigns, these are the most important things to get right. We’re in the golden age of the email newsletter, and, as hundreds of writers and reporters have discovered over the past few months, launching one is easy.But growing a newsletter, building an audience, and possibly turning the whole enterprise into a successful business, is unquestionably harder. WHY IS PHOTOJOURNALISM IMPORTANT TO THE WORLD? SOLIDARITY REPORTING MOVES AWAY FROM ELITES AND TO PEOPLE So with solidarity reporting, there are really three aspects that I emphasize when I talk about it. First and foremost is that the story has to start with the people subjected. The people affected by the issue rather than the academics, the elites, the elected officials who might be talking about the community, but separate from them. WHO TRUSTS — AND PAYS FOR — THE NEWS?
