_Fetch the Bolt
Cutters _
Fiona Apple
(2020)
What people who aren't already familiar with Fiona Apple need to understand is that an album from her isn't your typical album rollout. It's an event, much more on par with a solar eclipse than a new music Friday. "I had never seen a shooting star before" and all that. It's a telecommunication from someone who, through her eccentric and reclusive status, become somewhat of a modern philosopher, a poetic thinker who checks into the public eye every now and then to ruminate on the romantic and personal vicissitudes of her generation's modernlife.
_Fetch the Bolt Cutters_ is her most raw and righteously angry release yet. It was easy to expect this album to have sociopolitical commentary, and it's there, but not in the "take down the cheeto man" manner that so much "protest" art has become. She relates her personal anecdotes with the world around her, portraying a system of interpersonal relationships that make up a web of love and hate, and everything in between. Musically, it's at once challenging and immediate, experimental and catchy, hitting the sweet spot of boundary pushing without alienating anyone who's been waiting to hear from her with bated breath since The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will EverDo
.
Apple's recent fondness of vocal chants and rich harmonies plays against her classic jazz-rock piano stylings in erratic harmony, swirling and dissonant and careening through ecstatic expressions of love and devotion down into insecurity and neurosis that hits especially hard during quarantine. I know Fiona's relationship with the music industry (and releasing music in particular) is fraught, but I'm so glad that her friends convinced her to give this album to the public. It's the exact kind of charismatic vessel for creative energy and reminder of society's need for communal love that is necessary in the public sphere. The best example of this could be found in my favorite track, "I Want You to Love Me." It's a love song that's less about the individual it's directed at and more about the sheer act of desire, of wanting to be wanted, and the right to these feelings as a living breathing person. It's a great reminder for us zombies who haven't changed our clothes in four days that love is still in the world and all of us deserve itin some way.
(She also seems like such a cool dog mom.)Track ratings

_Peaceful as Hell _
Black Dresses
(2020)
"MAYBE WE COULD FIX IT LATER" Black Dresses are not a band; they’re an event. For their diehard fans, the industrial trauma pop duo represent more than just interesting music, building a deeper emotional response through their fusion of sincere expression of pain in their life with illnesses physical and mental alongside an interminable cuteness, a wholesome energy that moves their music outside of unbearable depression. They’re simultaneously the most important group right now in their discussion of life on the margins and incredibly approachable, constructing an image and sound around their love for pop music. Black Dresses is the intersection between the unbearable and the beautiful, operating in the gestalt of contemporary music to combine diametrically opposed aesthetics into something holistic and tangible. With Peaceful as Hell, the group’s fourth LP in two years, we as listeners enter the most chaotic space that Black Dresses have built yet; 2019’s Thank You polarized its audience with its aggression and unpolished fervor, but this new release is a different beast entirely. Consider lead single “Creep U,” to date the longest non-cover Black Dresses have produced. The song is a swirl of noise pop that descends into glitch music by the end, emphasizing their distinctly melodic approach to songwriting against a wall of noise. It’s an overwhelmingly pleasant song, something that Thank You never really approached; Peaceful as Hell is the sound of its title, a contradictory fanfare of confrontational ambiguity. The meaning of Black Dresses is their confidence, the excitement that permeates everything they do, making their often slapdash compositions coherent and extreme. Black Dresses are the epitome of queer; they’re a web of possibilities, a promise of freedom through unity, and a totality of experience. They’re Peaceful, and they’re Hell. “Bliss and Stupidity” opens with a gruesome synth sound topped with Devi singing “it’s okay to keep your soul hidden… it’s okay to be a bad singer.” It’s a mantra of optimism and accepting one’s limits, preceding a confessional outburst of frustrations. The song explores a tangle of anxieties, capturing a feeling of stagnation and paralysis, a position where you have no reason not to move forward except your own inability to move. It bounces between minimalist rhythmic synth notes and visceral lead guitar, a rock and a hard place. There is a simultaneous absence of threat and presence of fear; “No enemies but I’m still falling down.” This paralysis is the angst that draws me to Black Dresses the most. It’s a feeling of longing for betterness that never seems to come, a distrust of the world around you. Speaking as a trans person, this paralysis is something I’ve been working for years to pull myself out of. No matter what they say, Black Dresses make music about being trans – it’s about a hell of a lot of other things, much more explicitly than that, but transness is the gel that holds them together for me. It’s a stable instability, a dream for the inevitable to overtake me, of “having a skin everything crawls on, everything goes in.” Peaceful as Hell has codified my sense of placelessness in a way that I don’t feel any other album has. It’s the grip of nostalgia while staring ahead into the future, an internalization of everything that’s happened so far, in both the painful and the wonderful moments, with a belief that those wonderful moments can continue. Black Dresses give me hope every time I go to them, fulfilling a secular spirituality and humanism I can’t hearelsewhere.
But the spirit lies in filth. The absolute best song on this album, “Damage Suppressor,” almost feels like a pop punk song. It’s got nice catchy riffs and a hook that almost sounds like a Pulp song. However, it accentuates everything with a collage of sounds and gleefully shit production. What sounds like a potential indecision in their sound, a worst of both worlds mess, all makes sense when you consider Devi’s refrain, “There’s a part of me that wants to keep destroying me.” This line builds the somber atmosphere of a largely upbeat tune; it’s a song about self-deconstruction, with the assertion that “I’ll keep coming back together again.” It’s a song of sustenance, finding perpetuity in flux. There is no better summary of Peaceful as Hell than its cover art. On one level, there is the literal image of it: a lush field of green grass and bright blue skies overhead, covered with an image of flames in the shape of a peace sign. On another level though, there’s our recognition of these forms, the image of Charles O’Rear’s “Bliss” found in our memories of Windows XP juxtaposed with the flames of Hell – and the peace forged in that duality. But then, separate yourself a little more, and erase the content entirely. The cover art is composed of a photograph everyone has seen, a stock image, and a ubiquitous symbol. Perhaps Black Dresses aren’t as unapproachable as they seem; their art is founded on the familiar, playing with feelings we all have in tremendous new ways.Track ratings

_Sawayama
_
Rina Sawayama
(2020)
RINA SAWAYAMA RE-INTRODUCES HERSELF Rina Sawayama's debut album has been my most anticipated release ever since I heard her self-titled EP, RINA for the first time. That project simultaneously pays tribute to the pop diva music of the late 90s and early 2000's while elevating that sound to heights it had never seen before. I immediately wanted more - and with nearly three years of waiting behind me, Rina Sawayama is finally here with her self-titled debut album, SAWAYAMA. Generally, what originally attracted to me to Rina's music, and what took her EP from just great music to something genuinely transcendent in my eyes was how strong her songwriting is. Every song on the album shares a through-line with the song before it, and they all relate and build on each other to a crescendo with _CYBER STOCKHOLM SYNDROME_ being the
absolutely incredible payoff. One of my favourite songs of the decade, it offers the ultimate pay-off to that through-line. On RINA , the main concept, the through-line, was social media and how it's broadly impacted everybody's life. But on SAWAYAMA, it's just about Rina. The opening track, Dynasty represents this to the max -evoking a families legacy, and the burden that comes with that - this sort of pressure and struggle to fit in is something that comes up frequently on here - the pain she brings up on _Dynasty_, feeling out of place in Tokyo on _Akasaka Sad_, before creating belonging and peace elsewhere on _Tokyo Love Hotel_ and _Chosen Family_. The album has a narrative to it, and the narrative is Rina becoming who she is. She does the best she can to make this album feel like an introduction to her as a person - she gives exact dates and locations when reminiscing about her life on _Bad Friend_ and _Paradisin'_. The latter of which Sawayama said she made trying to create something like her own sitcom theme song. And for something that could've sounded gimmicky and tacky, it comes out as a uniquely amazing song, and a standout on the album. Then on the opposite end of that sound, there's _Who's Gonna Save U Now_, which sounds like Rina's final boss theme - something that, again, could've not worked at all if it wasn't done right. But it plays so fluently with the rest of the tracklist that it works perfectly - that's only compounded by the build-up that the _Fuck This World_ interlude brings. On it there's one of the many completely addicting hooks on here. The choruses on here manage to make so much work with so little, and a lot of the time they're simpler than they were on her EP - but it really works. Nearly every song has an incredibly catchy chorus while also not being more than line or two. SAWAYAMA is an amazing album that mixes self-reflective and personal songwriting with incredibly bouncy and grandiose production to create a feeling of being both far back in her past and far off in popmusic's future.

_Thunderbird _
William Crooks
(2020)
_THUNDERBIRD_ is the third installment in the trilogy of tapes from William Crooks, _waterboy_ and _grasstype_ being the first two respectively. Like the others, it features a wide array of rap - primarily experimental hip hop, cloud rap, and trap - that are mixed really well. There’s also touches of emo rap, trap metal, andalternative r&b.
Track to track, _THUNDERBIRD_ traverses perfectly through all these different genres with Crooks’ wonderful lyricism, delivery, and charisma intertwined. It of course has its handful of bangers; my favorites being the fast-paced and fun fusion of trap metal and electronic on “CRASHTHECAR,” and the somber, hard-hitting, self-love/self-hatred track “LOVEYOURSELF.” Around the bangers are cuts that are softer and more relaxed; tracks like the nice, interlude-like “one (for everything that got left behind),” and the opening “leavemealone” and closer “scaredofthedark” which are delicate but great. Most of the tracks are chill and the album wouldn’t be the same without them. It also wouldn’t be the same without the extensive and solid list of producers and features on here. Previously working with people like Folie and Dylan Brady, Crooks’ production list is always interesting. On here, he has production from umru, Knapsack, ache, Cavan Brady, underscores, Jamvvis, Kai Whiston, William Crooks himself, and a feature from Fraxiom - some new faces, others are artists he’s worked with before. _THUNDERBIRD_ likely has his biggest production list yet; it’s fitting or coincidental since this is probably his greatest project yet. The variety and creativity shown throughout each project from William Crooks is awesome, but this might be the best in the trilogy. I could see him continuing this and making it into a saga, though he’s somewhat said otherwise in a tweet from last year, but
I’ll be excited for whatever comes next. William Crooks is one of the most creative artists right now and he possibly made one of the best hip hop projects of the year, again - _waterboy_ being one of the best from last year. MC_Ferrari (47 reviews)

The Kills
(2016)

Urubamba
(1981)
Formerly known as Los Incas before changing their name and famous for working with Simon and Garfunkel on their 1970 song "El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could), this Argentinian-Uruguayan folk ensemble formed in France. There is Andean folk music galore in this beautiful album. Urubamba take us on a journey through the South American landscape, having been inspired by the beauty of the Urubamba river in Peru that is gracefully featured on the album cover. The album was recorded in 1974, but this version with the stunning artwork was re-released in 1981 on Warner Bros records. Jorge Milchberg pens nearly all the albumpieces.
Produced by Paul Simon, _Urubamba_ is arguably their most famous and readily available recording. The album features exquisite acoustic guitar passages, the charango as well as the sound of the blissful and magical quena, the traditional flute of the Andes. There are a lot of really good Andean albums out there, and I've heard my share ;however, Urumbaba's self-titled album is the one that has stayed with me the longest and one I still hold dearly to my heart.Track ratings

Various Artists
(2017)
Disney's 1973 animated rendition of Robin Hood is an odd one. The film had a long, ever-changing gestation period before finally becoming reality, with a number of tonal changes during the production; the final product even features recycled animation loops from prior films as a cost-cutting method. It has barely any plot; things happen in a sequence to form a narrative but there's no sense of drama or progression to it, and instead it resembles pocket stories that interconnect in a fairly relaxed fashion. There's no Big Disney Song moments and the presence of the occasional sung song is almost coincidental. And yet, it's one of Disney's most charming films: much greater than the sum of its parts, it's a movie that simply feels good to watch. It's so full of personality, brought to life by the wonderful art and the fantastic voice acting, that few Disney films can actually match it in that department. Part of its magic is in fact in how it's relatively low-stakes; it's a film you can put on in any kind of mood and be guaranteed to enjoy and be captivated by. The act of releasing the score as part of Disney's Legacy Collection soundtrack reissue series to begin with is worth an applause. Despite being beloved by many especially in Europe, the film hasn't really had the right amount of financial clout to be acknowledged by the US-centric Disney and so has been stuck in an unfortunate limbo when it comes to any peripheral material. The Legacy Collection release is the first official release of the soundtrack since the 70s, and the first time the entire score has been released, beautifully remastered but keeping the warmth of the original. This means that we finally get the chance to hear some of the score cuts fully audible and unedited, and truly appreciate the score that's otherwise gone somewhat unsung. Much like the film itself, its score went through some redesigns and tweaking. The film was originally intended to feature a deliciously contrasting combination of British and American folklore, set in the High Sierras of the American west. By the time the film design had toned down the Western flavours and returned the setting to its country of origin, enough work had been done on its initial musical themes that they made it to the final film to an extent. The final score is an interesting mix of worlds, operating somewhere between whimsical cartoon orchestral songs of yore, a more traditionally Disney-esque cinematic approach with period-accurate instrumental flair, and the folk/country approach inspired by the original drafts. The score, largely composed by George Bruns , is a delightful, memorable little thing: matching the film's tone its cosy and down to earth, more in favour of quaint and subtle melodic pieces rather than big set piece compositions (even the climactic ending scenes are covered by a single composition). It's not a score that jumps out and shouts for attention, and it's clearly been made with a supporting role for the visual side in mind. But listening to it outside the film reveals all kinds of little touches and details you may have missed out when the dialogue has been set over it, and it's a testament to how well the music marries with the film that each song here is so fully evocative of the scenes they're set to that they replay clearly in your head as the music plays. Of the fully instrumental songs, it's e.g. the variations on the regally bombastic Prince John's theme (e.g. "Hail John") and the light-hearted scene-setting of "Skippy's Birthday Gift" that are particularly close to my heart; they're also good examples of the film's rich use of leitmotifs, that then get fleshed out by the vocal songs later on, which is always an aspect I appreciate in soundtracks. Speaking of the vocal tracks, Robin Hood was released near the start of Disney's transitional period from the fairytale musicals of their older features to the airplay-enticing hit song extravaganzas of more modern Disney, and so while a few sung songs are scattered throughout the film, they're treated more like narrative interludes than big centrepieces. The closest thing to it is the Oscar-nominated "Love", sung by Nancy Adams , and even it is an atypically gentle song for the big love theme of the film; but thanks to its softer touch, it does manage to reach something actually genuinely romantic. Three out of the film's five vocal songs are sung by the omnipresent troubadour narrator Alan-a-Dale, voiced by the country legend Roger Miller : "Oo-De-Lally" is little more than an establishing intro piece though it's thoroughly lovely in its own right, but "Not in Nottingham" really showcases the value of getting a proper soundtrack release, because now its gorgeous church organ outro gets the chance to finally play in its entirety, uninterrupted. Getting the full version had been a personal daydream for many years, and the Legacy Collection feels worth it for that alone. Miller also contributes his charisma to "Whistle Stop", which oddly might just be the film's most iconic song even though its vocals are fully wordless - it runs through the gamut of film's styles in its three minutes and has a dangerously catchy hook, and it has managed to establish itself as the first thing that comes to mind musically from the film. The most elaborate song of the lot is "The Phony King of England", the closest the film gets to the kind of sing-along number you'd come to expect from most Disney films. It's a load of good fun, full of quotable lines, and it's where you can hear remnants of the film's original musical direction the clearest. In terms of the extra things that The Legacy Collection issue brings to the table, it's a fantastic set for a fan and a collector. The packaging is incredible, full of gorgeous custom artwork and original concept art, as well as a long, detailed history of the film's and the score's production, full of information about the various changes and plans both went through; the sheer level of love clearly put into the overall set makes it one of my favourite physical packagings in my collection. The second disc is devoted to various bonus material, from demos to alternative versions cut from the film to songs from _Let's Hear It for Robin Hood_, an obscure musical storybook version of the film, featuring Louis Prima as a facsimile of The Jungle Book 's King Louie narrating the film. The demos are particularly great as they really highlight the original country western direction, with the full-on country hootenanny version of "The Phony King of England" being the creme de la creme of the set. With the alternative versions/reprises, you can understand why they were ultimately chopped and it's especially disappointing that the otherwise delightful Robin-lead version of "Love" isn't sung by Brian Bedford himself, but elsewhere it's still fun to hear Peter Ustinov chew the scenery as Prince John in his own reprise of "Not in Nottingham". The big band style cuts from _Let's Hear It for Robin Hood_ are interesting supplemental material; the original songs aren't the most memorable perhaps but they retain some of the original source material's charms, and by this point "The Phony King of England" has fully established itself as the kind of song that I can happily listen to in countless different versions (why it hasn't become a canonical Disney classic is bewildering). The bonus material doesn't account to much in terms of runtime, only around 26 minutes in total, but it's fascinating archival material for fans of the film. I.e., the exact kind of thing you'd hope from a celebratory re-release. And honestly, this whole set and this review are effectively preaching for the converted. In the wide sea of Disney films Robin Hood is more of a cult classic, and while its score is a very good one it's arguably not flashy enough to swoon anyone who hasn't already drank the Sherwood kool-aid. But as someone who at the very moment of writing this has two sets of artwork related to this film on the nearby wall and whose _second_ copy of a similarly themed mug is a permanent fixture of his PC desk, _and_ as someone who is a big enough music fan to review things, this is about as essential as a piece of merchandise can get. You can also tell that they wanted to make the release as comprehensive as possible, from liner notes to bonus material (the notes even lament a few particular archive takes they learned about while researching for this edition, the recordings of which are seemingly lost forever); it's a celebration of something that hasn't had its day in the spotlight yet. It's opened up a way to fully enjoy a specific aspect of the film in a way that hasn't been possible before, and for a fan of the film it's only made the entire experience even greater. _Oo-de-lally._ FlintGF (553 reviews )Sponsored links
