RAINFOREST RESCUE
Jun 2, 2021 180+ Organisations and Academics Reject Extractive-heavy EU Green Deal. Plans to drastically increase mining in Europe and in the global South are bad news for the climate, ecosystems and human rights around the world. OUR RAINFOREST CAMPAIGNS The rainforest. A green sea of ferns, mosses, vines and ancient trees. Iridescent butterflies and colorful birds. Flowers in every hue of the rainbow. The “green lung” is a natural wonder of the world. Find out more about the world’s most diverse, fascinating and threatened ecosystem. Recent successes. FACT CHECK: NESTLÉ PALM OIL IS NOT SUSTAINABLE In 2010, Nestlé pledged that it would only use deforestation-free raw materials within ten years. And how has the food giant lived up to its promise? To date, it cannot rule out rainforest destruction for nearly a third of the palm oil it uses. In 2019, Nestlé recorded more than 1,000 cases of deforestation per day. Development organizations also accuse Nestlé's palm oil suppliers of land PALM OIL – DEFORESTATION FOR EVERYDAY PRODUCTS Palm oil is literally everywhere – in our foods, cosmetics, cleaning products and fuels. It’s a source of huge profits for multinational corporations, while at the same time destroying the livelihoods of smallholders. Displacement of indigenous peoples, deforestation and loss of biodiversity are all consequences of our palm oil consumption. THE DARK SIDE OF TESLA: GIGAFACTORIES NEED GIGAMINES The production of electric vehicles requires vast amounts of raw materials such as nickel: Around 32 kg of this metal are needed for the lithium batteries of a mid-range car. To secure access, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is encouraging global nickel mining and is considering investing in the mining industry in Indonesia and elsewhere. BIOFUEL - RAINFOREST RESCUE Biofuel. The use of bioethanol and biodiesel in motor vehicles is a misguided attempt to save the climate. The ugly reality is that "green" fuels are destroying rainforests, accelerating climate change and condemning millions to poverty and hunger. Habitat destruction, land grabs, civil strife and rising food prices are the unintended QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT BIOFUELS Plant biomass contains a maximum of two percent of the incident solar energy (or considerably less in the case of sugar cane, rapeseed, soybean, corn and grain), and the efficiency of conversion of biomass into biofuel is about 0.15 percent to 0.3 percent. This also QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT BIODIVERSITY The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) report “State of the Wild - a Global Portrait” contains a list of animals most threatened by extinction. We’re proud to say that with our hard-working partners on the ground and the international pressure generated by our petitions, we’re scoring real successes. This applies equally to costly mahogany, teak and rosewood, and inexpensive types such as meranti, ramin andgabun.

Life on Earth originated around 4 billion years ago. While it initially existed only in the oceans, it later spread to the land and atmosphere. Since then, an unfathomable number of species have evolved, around half of which are insects. Numerous plant and animal species have yet to be documented, and many new ones are being discovered every day. GLOBAL WITNESS ISSUES ALARMING REPORT ON HUMAN RIGHTS Wednesday 29 July 2020 – Global Witness today revealed the highest number of land and environmental defenders murdered on record in a single year, with 212 people killed in 2019 for peacefully defending their homes and standing up to the destruction of nature. The NGO’s annual report also shed a light on the urgent role land and BIOFUEL - RAINFOREST RESCUE Biofuel. The use of bioethanol and biodiesel in motor vehicles is a misguided attempt to save the climate. The ugly reality is that "green" fuels are destroying rainforests, accelerating climate change and condemning millions to poverty and hunger. In 2010, Nestlé pledged that it would only use deforestation-free raw materials within ten years. And how has the food giant lived up to its promise? Development organizations also accuse Nestlé's palm oil suppliers of land PALM OIL – DEFORESTATION FOR EVERYDAY PRODUCTS Palm oil is literally everywhere – in our foods, cosmetics, cleaning products and fuels. It’s a source of huge profits for multinational corporations, while at the same time destroying the livelihoods of smallholders. Displacement of indigenous peoples, deforestation and loss of biodiversity are all consequences of our palm oil consumption. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT BIODIVERSITY The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) report “State of the Wild - a Global Portrait” contains a list of animals most threatened by extinction. EVEN MORE SEVERE CRITIQUE AGAINST CARGILL 23,000 hectares of rainforest in a conservation area for orangutans were destroyed – for a palm oil plantation. The concession is held by a palm oil company which also delivers to Cargill. The corporation keeps referring to their apparently sustainable supply chain. Cargill however won´t be able to dismiss the EIA report too swiftly. THE DARK SIDE OF TESLA: GIGAFACTORIES NEED GIGAMINES The production of electric vehicles requires vast amounts of raw materials such as nickel: Around 32 kg of this metal are needed for the lithium batteries of a mid-range car.
