HOW Neuroscientists are now able to tell us startlingly specific things about how our brains work. Recent research details ways to use our brains to improve our lot in life, whether it’s thinking happy thoughts or getting rid of negative ones. It turns out that we don’t have to passively accept what our brains think about. WHAT’S HAPPENED TO OUR ATTENTION SPANS DURING THE PANDEMIC Attention spans are widely misapplied, misused, and misunderstood. The classic attention span research established that college students could pay attention for about 21-22 minutes. At minute 22, their brains would suddenly turn to jello, leak out of their heads, and disappear into their uncomfortable lecture-hall chairs, never to return. But other studies have found that WHAT SHOULD A PUBLIC SPEAKER WEAR? 4. Dress in something that allows you to move. A speaker needs to be able to move on stage, and some fashions restrict movement so severely that you’ll look ridiculous when you try to walk. That won’t work. You have to be able to get on and off – and around – the stage. 5. Dress like a grownup. Unless you are 12. Back in November I took a shot at predicting the future of meetings – how virtual they would be once we were able to go back to work. A classic mistake that people make when attempting to persuade is to forget to close the sale or actually ask for the thing that they want. People rarely say ‘yes’ to questions that haven’t been asked. Don’t forget to make your case. HOW TO HELP YOUR AUDIENCE REMEMBER WHAT YOU SAY Actually, all we need to refresh our attention spans is to have a 10-second stretch, or a deep breath, or a change of position. Get your audience to stand up, even if only for a moment, and you’ll renew their interest, their attention, and their ability to remember what you’re saying. You should take your audience’s memories seriously. HOW PUBLIC SPEAKING HAS EVOLVED How Public Speaking Has Evolved. Stage acting in the Victorian period would seem bizarrely and hilariously stylized to us today. The technique was based on a gestural vocabulary that included drawing back, with both hands open and raised up, eyes wide open, and mouth agape, to indicate surprise, and that sort of thing. 9 WAYS TO INTERACT WITH AN AUDIENCE 2.Get the audience to juxtapose apparently dissimilar items. You can set up the juxtaposition or bring your audience in on the fun early. The idea is to try to put two items that seem poles apart together. Pizza and weight loss, anyone? 3.Involve the audience in creativedestruction.
