St. Boniface Church. Closed by the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1990, the historic St. Boniface church, located at the corner of Noble and Chestnut, had sat vacant and deteriorating for two decades. Organized by Preservation Chicago and the Woodlawn Coalition to Save St. Gelasius, the keynote speaker was then-20th Ward Alderman Arenda Troutman, who pledged to “lay down in front of the bulldozer” to save the historic church. PALMER HOUSE BY JOHN VAN OSDEL BUILT 1875, DEMOLISHED 1925 “Supreme among the post-fire hotels was the $2,500,000 Palmer House at State and Monroe Streets. The parish roster then listed 300 families. The old mission church was remodeled into a school, which opened in September 1909.
