It is with heavy hearts that we share a decision made on March 25, 2021 by the Board of Directors to permanently close Portland Children’s Museum and Opal School, effective June 30, 2021. Due to the coronavirus, the Museum has been closed to ABOUT US | PORTLAND CHILDREN'S MUSEUM Portland Children's Museum was a museum that didn’t act like a museum because our audience—children and the adults who care for them—was more important to us than anything we collect. Indeed, our audience was the essential component that gave our exhibits meaning. Instead of investing in precious objects, we used familiar materialsto

Portland Children's Museum was inspired by an approach to early childhood education first developed in Reggio Emilia, Italy. More educational philosophy than rigid framework, this approach emerges from a series of core principles based on a fundamental respect for children as knowledge-bearers and gifted researchers who learn through their exploration of the world and through the countlessOUTDOOR ADVENTURE
Outdoor Adventure transformed more than 1.3 acres of previously inaccessible land around the Museum into a remarkable outdoor play space. Designed by a team of education experts, based on their extensive observations of kids at their best, Outdoor Adventure welcomes the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—to embrace a world of exploration and discovery.OPAL CHARTER SCHOOL
To be eligible for Opal Charter School in 2021-22, children must be 5 years old by September 1, 2021 to enter kindergarten (Opal School does not admit early-entry kindergarten students). Families must reside within the Portland Public School District boundaries by July 15, 2021. Proof of age and proof of residency are required per PPS policy. OPAL BEGINNING SCHOOL: 2021-22 ENROLLMENT Applications received by Monday, March 8, 2021 at 5 pm are given priority for the first round of enrollment offers. We do not maintain a perpetual waitlist from year-to-year. ANNUAL TUITION. Outdoor Adventure transformed more than 1.3 acres of previously inaccessible land around the Museum into a remarkable outdoor play space. Designed by a team of education experts, based on their extensive observations of kids at their best, Outdoor Adventure welcomes the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—to embrace a world of exploration and discovery.OPAL CHARTER SCHOOL
Opal Charter School is a public elementary (K-5) school authorized by charter with the Portland Public School District, and is a program of the Portland Children’s Museum. In 1946 visionary Portlander, Dorothea Lensch, founded the “Junior Museum and Adventure House,” as part of Portland Parks and Recreation. Lensch, who served as Portland’s recreation director from 1937–1972, was particularly dedicated to meeting the needs of Portland’s underserved communities.
