For many who went through the convict system the only accounts of what they did were their birth, marriage and death records or when they were charged/sentenced. Port Arthur had its own Law Courts, and with the records of hearings and punishments, we are able to help piece together and build on the stories of those who spent time here. Used only for minor offences, it was still a grand building in its own right, and provides some tempting angles for photographers, such as @philwarbo #DiscoverTasmania #HobartandBeyond #portarthur #tasmanpeninsula #tasmania #australia #igers_tas #australianconvictsites #convictsite #worldheritagesite #lawcourts #holidayherenextyear __@portarthurtassie
Do the leaves change colour when there are no visitors to watch them? Well, yes, yes they do. Admired by our ever busy Gardens crew, they are still putting on a show. This row of golden goodness was taken last year by @alokkhanke. #DiscoverTasmania #HobartAndBeyond #portarthur #tasmanpeninsula #tasmania #igers_tas #australia #holidayherenextyear #autumn #leavesarechanging #autumncolour #golden While there may be no visitors on site, the Gardens crew have still been as busy as, well, you know, making sure everything is as beautiful as you remember or imagine. Thank you @edwardtphotography for your close-up of this little moment. @DiscoverTasmania @HobartandBeyond #australiasconvictsites #portarthur #tasmanpeninsula #tasmania #australia #igers_tas #holidayherenextyear #busybee #bumblebee The Parsonage holds a special place in many of those who have been on one of our Ghost Tours, but how much do you know about the 'Reverend' who is behind many of our reported ghost stories? Rev George Eastman was born in Portsmouth, England and his experience with convicts began early in his life as he watched them in the harbour prior to transportation. He served various appointments in Van Diemen's Land before arriving at Port Arthur in 1859 and served as the Protestant Chaplain until his death on 25 April 1870 - making this the 150th anniversary of his passing. His wife, Louisa, and him had 13 children, some of whom were born at the site (and unfortunately one death) and some of whom are pictured with him here. His work, values and ethic held him in great esteem with many, with obituaries at the time reflecting this. He was buried on the Isle of the Dead where his sandstone vault still remains. Our state (and, indeed, country) has faced many challenges, but with passionate people and businesses like those who were awarded, as well as all those contributing to the vibrant and caring Tasmanian tourism industry, we will continue to thrive. A huge thank you to the Port Arthur Historic Sites team and those who have supported us through 2019, especially the visitors who allow us to continue to share this important part of Australia’s history. Blankets and tubs were brought from all directions to convey water, but it was all to no purpose.” On 29 February 1884, the Church was accidentally set alight by a worker who was burning off some garden waste from the Parsonage next door. Once the fire reached the old shingle roof, there was little that could be done to save the building and it burned to the ruin that we have today.
