ON BASHO - POETRY SOCIETY OF AMERICA ON THE MAGICAL REACH OF BASHO. Sometimes the world feels weighty to us, like Atlas' burden, sometimes almost lark-light, unbearably sweet; Basho, the peripatetic 17th century Japanese poet, had a knack for distilling, in terse language, our seemingly contradictory sense of the world as onus and the world as gift. Two decades ago, I selected MY IDEA OF ABSTRACTION IS WHITE LIGHTNING Four Quartets Prize. DALE YOUNG ON JACK GILBERT’S “A BRIEF FOR THE DEFENSE” We could no longer go to restaurants, cafes, bars, sporting events. And Jack Gilbert's poem kept surfacing from deep inside me. Every news item mentioned the virus, and I kept hearing Jack Gilbert. This poem, "A Brief for the Defense," is complicated and not always loved by people, but in it I hear a call for resistance in the face of POETRY SOCIETY OF AMERICAFEATURESEVENTSPOETRY IN MOTIONAWARDSABOUTUSSHOP

IN THEIR OWN WORDS
Poets and translators on their work. DEBORAH PAREDEZ ON “A SHOW OF HANDS” How to de-familiarize ourselves, how to make strange, the familiar language and images that have informed us about and inured us to the effects of war and violence? How might a focus on Latinx experiences of war and violence, and the vexed relationship Latinx communities have with "documentation," help us interrogate the visual and rhetorical terms and tropes of documenting disaster? I take up these questions in my book, _Year of the Dog_, a Latina feminist chronicle of the Vietnam War era.Continue Reading

-------------------------ENJOY A POEM
John Keats
THIS LIVING HAND, NOW WARM AND CAPABLE This living hand, now warm and capable Of earnest grasping, would, if it were cold And in the icy silence of the tomb, So haunt thy days and chill thy dreaming nights That thou would wish thine own heart dry of blood, So in my veins red life might stream again, And thou be conscience-calm’d. See, here it is– I hold it towards you.Read Poem
