Thanks for writing in, Darren. I dabble in video but it’s by no means my area of expertise so I reached out to Nick Swartzendruber from DRONE COWBOYS who has been absolutely killing it in the film game for a while now. Here is what Nick had topass along:

DIY: CLEANING YOUR CAMERA SENSORAugust 28th, 2019
?
If you’re anything like me, the thought of cleaning your own sensor is enough to give you an anxiety attack. This somewhat menial task seems to torment beginners and professionals alike. After an epic failed attempt at cleaning the sensor on one of my D750s and almost ruining it, I’ve never been comfortable trying again. I came across a great video today from Garey Gomez on how to clean your own sensor. I wish I would have seen this a few years ago but better late thannever I guess!
Check it out.

OVERCOMING FEAR & CONFUSION FOR THE NEW REAL ESTATE PHOTOGRAPHERAugust 27th, 2019
As
with any new endeavor, when we get into real estate photography, the first challenge is that we don’t know what we don’t know–and our early efforts tend to show it! It’s understandable that poor results are likely to happen in the beginning and we take solace in our commitment to do better at the next shoot. This is a very healthy and constructive way to respond to the disappointment of a shoot where we didn’t produce the types of images we’d hoped for. Indeed, we all know that the lessons learned from disappointment and failure are among the most powerful and enduring. In this regard, one could say that there is _value_ in failure. For many people though, rather than seeing a disappointment as an opportunity for improvement, it serves to create negativity and doubt. This starts a vicious cycle in which one gets increasingly fearful about what _might_ go wrong, rather than visualizing things going well. While this can happen to shooters of all experience levels, it tends to happen most often (and most intensely) for newer shooters. When we produce less-than-stellar results, our challenge is to find a way to interrupt these thoughts of self-doubt and fear. I’d like to offer the following suggestions as to how to do so:Continue Reading »

PFRE ASKS: WHAT INSPIRES YOU?August 26th, 2019
Author: Vince Collura I look at a LOT of real estate photography in the current job that I am in. It’s one of my favorite parts of my daily routine; scanning through what’s being worked on, providing some QA, and plucking out exceptional images for my own collection. The thing is, even when I am not working on my real estate photography business, much of the content I consume is visually similar. From _ADmagazine_
,
to _For Love of Old Houses_ to FStoppers content, and the tons of FB groups for what we do, I find myself surrounded by inspiration. What sites, publications, accounts, and apps are you looking at oftenfor inspiration?

WHAT’S YOUR WORST-EVER GEAR PURCHASE?August 25th, 2019
I
stumbled across an article recently in which the author discussed some of the gear he regretted purchasing. It made me wince! Why? Because one of his biggest regrets, was also one of mine: the Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 lens. I bought it many moons ago and well before I began shooting professionally; and I can confirm that author’s viewpoint … it was a complete dog, repeat: DOG of a lens!! Anyway, earlier this year, I wrote an article asking for everyone’s FAVORITE“GO-TO” GADGET
. So, I
thought it might be fun(?) hearing about everyone’s _LEAST_ favorite gear/gadget purchased, since turning pro. For me, it was a large, top-of-the-line case, with tough-as-nails wheels. The promo video for it got me really excited because it was apparently built like a tank and would allow me to put all of my gear into one case. So, after filling it up the night before my next shoot, I tried to lift it into the trunk of my car and much to my dismay, it was an Herculean effort! Apparently, in my excitement to get the bag, I’d forgotten to read the specs closely enough to see that the thing weighed a ton, _empty_, let alone with any gear in it. When I got to the shoot, it was a new build on a huge property, with a long gravel driveway, quickly making those great, tough-as-nails wheels they’d advertised, totally useless to me. To put salt on the wound, the house was quite elevated and, on a scorching-hot day, I had to carry the case up what seemed like ten flights of stairs. I was exhausted before the shoot began! I vividly remember how terribly embarrassed it was trying to make small talk with the homeowner, trying to fit 2-3 words together between chest-heaving breaths, trying to get air back in my lungs! All while my agent client was looking on … I’m pretty sure she wasn’timpressed!
So, what is the one piece of gear or gadget that most fills you withregret?

ARE 3D TOURS THE “QR CODE” OF VISUAL MEDIA?August 22nd, 2019
Author: Vince Collura As a techie, I get it–they’re cool and new and something else for me to talk to home owners and agents about. Some of them have video game-like qualities. Some of them have a “doll house” view that allows me to see the property as a whole. I can even use it with my Occulus Rift that I haven’t ever had a use for! I totally get it! I’ve invested into the appeal, and even went on the road with Mattel a few years back to show how we may be able to give people walk-throughs with their next generation Viewmaster. We can’t deny that there’s a cool factor. _I even sold my last home because of one!_ Of course, that cost 3 guitars and a screen used prop from “A Nightmare on Elm Street” as part of a 3D scavenger hunt that went viral, but ultimately–my buyers found my home because someone said “Hey, you gotta seethis.”
But what I want to know is: _Are they useful?_Continue Reading »

MANFROTTO 410 JUNIOR: DIY ARCA SWISS CLAMP ON A BUDGETAugust 21st, 2019
Author: Garey Gomez
Viewers of my tutorialhave been asking me
how I use an L-Bracket with my Manfrotto 410 Junior geared tripod head. I have answered the question so many times now that I decided to take a few photos and write a blog post explaining what is needed tomake it work.
It’s a nice alternative to the more expensive solution from Hejnar Photo. It works identically, but costs about a third of the price and is even easier to install. If you can mount a camera to a baseplate, then you can do this modification. You can find the write-up HERE.

SKYLUM ANNOUNCES LUMINAR 4 WITH AI SKY REPLACEMENTSAugust 20th, 2019
Reza in Sweden writes: > I saw an ad a few weeks ago that says Luminar 4, which is coming out > late this fall, will have an AI sky replacement feature. If this > technology works well, it could save me a ton of time in post and > potentially have a significant impact on our industry. What are your> thoughts?
I’m sure people in our community will be torn on this issue but I’m all for anything that can help us produce better images in less time. That being said, there are a few basic things that should be considered when doing proper sky replacements. * Learn a few useful selection techniques in Photoshop to make sure that you can create clean masks in multiple scenarios and avoid hazing around fine details like leaves and branches. * Make sure you choose a sky that suits the scene and doesn’t look over-processed. There’s nothing worse than seeing a nicely composed front exterior of a home, only to be distracted by an obviously fakesky.
* Spend some time adjusting the colors of the entire image to make sure the overall tones make sense. For example, if you drop in a lovely sunset, the home and surrounding areas should have a warm toneto them.
Will the Luminar AI be able to make these considerations and adjust accordingly? I don’t know but I’m excited to find out! Once the software is available, we’ll do some test runs and report back tothe community.
In the meantime, I’m curious to hear what everyone else thinks.Brandon in

I UPGRADED MY CAMERA AND I THINK I REGRET ITAugust 19th, 2019
Kris in California writes. > I’ve been shooting with a D750 for the past few years but I’ve > recently switched over to the Z7 mirrorless system with a 14-30mm > lens and although the image quality is excellent, I find the lens > distortion borderline unbearable, especially at the longer focal > lengths. Has anyone else had this problem? > If so, how are they managing? I’m starting to think the switch to > mirrorless was a mistake. Kris, your question comes at a great time. I’ve been using a D750 for my still work and a Sony A6500 for my videos. I like to travel as light as possible, so I’ve been wanting to consolidate down to one camera for a while now. After seeing how good the video is on the Z7, I decided to make the switch. While the image and video quality is excellent, I have to agree, the distortion on the 14-30mm lens is brutal. I’m sure there will be a lens correction profile available at some point, but I haven’t been able to find one either. While it’s annoying and time-consuming when editing stills, it’s not the end of the world. That being said, dealing with the distortion while filming is an entirely different story, and I’m almost out of patience. So, I too, am starting to second-guess my decision and am seriously considering going back to the trusty old D750 with the 14-24mm. I’m hopeful that there is an reasonable solution out there that I just haven’t found yet, so I’ll put a few questions out to the community and see what comes back. If you are thinking about upgrading your camera, here are a few thingsto consider first:
* Newer cameras may not have lens correction profiles available in Lightroom or other editing programs. * File management programs such as Finder on a Mac, may not be able to preview images taken on newer cameras. This can make it more time consuming to manage your images if you shoot multiple projects perday.
* Newer cameras that require lens adapters in order to use your existing lenses can affect the position that your camera sits on the tripod, and can impede your ability to see the bubble that so many of us use to level our shots. My questions to the community are: * Has anyone else experienced similar issues with the Nikon Z6/Z7? If so, how are you managing these issues? * Do those of you who shoot with Canon/Sony mirrorless bodies and wider zoom lenses have the same problems? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!Brandon in Gear
