BIC CRISTAL BALLPOINT PEN REVIEW From a performance perspective it has a wide variety of uses. The oil-based ink writes well on many surfaces, is smooth, and dries quickly. It is also water-resistant, making it a good choice for outdoor use as well as waterproof paper such as Rite in the Rain.. MUSUBI COSMO AIR LIGHT FOLIO NOTEBOOK (A5): A REVIEW The Musubi Cosmo Air Light Folio Notebook is a beautiful minimalist notebook with 208 pages of Cosmo Air Light paper. KOKUYO CAMPUS SMART RING BINDER REVIEW These disc systems are really powerful and surprisingly sturdy. And of course, they offer their own proprietary hole punchers so you can use any paper you want. At the end of the day, I can't really recommend the Kokuyo Campus Smart Ring binder system to anyone unless you already know it will fit your needs exactly. After comparing these three modern flex nibs, I have to give first prize for line variation to the Pilot 912 with FA nib. This nib simply flexes more easily and with more line variation than the other two nibs. The Franklin-Christoph SIG Flex Nibgets second place.
WALDMANN PRÉCIEUX FOUNTAIN PEN REVIEW Objectively, the Précieux is a great pen. Waldmann’s build quality is exceptional. The metal barrel is well-balanced and comfortable to use. The 18k gold nib - manufactured for Waldmann by Bock - is tuned perfectly for writing right out of the box. It’s all-around enjoyable to use, and beautiful to look at. SAILOR 1911 STANDARD MUSIC NIB REVIEW Sailor's 1911 barrel is excellent in its own right, with black, rounded ends set off by strongly colored resin barrels. I have no idea. The fact is, this is a good pen, if not a great one. Released to the public in 1950, it has had a 65-plus year run and shows no signs of slowing down. I have no idea. The fact is, this is a good pen, if not a great one. Released to the public in 1950, it has had a 65-plus year run and shows no signs of slowing down. The design is revered too, with its clear hex-barrel being featured in the Museum of Modern Art. WINGBACK MECHANICAL PEN REVIEW The Wingback Mechanical Pen recently launched on Kickstarter, and I was able to take a look at an early prototype thanks to the project creator. With it in tow for the past couple of weeks, I have to say I am impressed with the build quality of the Wingback. There are many checks in the pros column, but a few in the cons as well. PLATINUM BLUE BLACK INK REVIEW The cartridges come in a ten pack and cost $7 a box, while the large bottle costs a flat $20. Both are a pretty good deal, but I lean toward the bottle since the cartridges only work with Platinum pens. This ink is good enough to enjoy in all pens! ESTERBROOK “THE JOURNALER” NIB REVIEW It’s rare when I review a stand-alone nib product on The Pen Addict, but in the case of The Journaler, I think that it is more than worthwhile to discuss.. The Journaler is a collaboration between Esterbrook and Gena Salorino, of Custom Nib Studio. The idea behind this product was to create a nib grind that would mimic the experience of a vintage Esterbrook nib. PILOT LUCINA FOUNTAIN PEN REVIEW Pilot Lucina Fountain Pen Review. The Pilot Lucina is a pen that I've often thought about getting, but couldn't really justify the almost-premium price tag. I'd look at pictures and read about it, but I couldn't understand why it was in the mid-$80 range. Basically, it's a unique design for Pilot, and it has some really fun colors. LIHIT LAB HINEMO STAND PEN POUCH IN RED: A REVIEW The Lihit Lab Hinemo Stand Pen Pouch is made from canvas (Fuji Kinbai) woven in Japan and sourced from various places around the world. The pouch itself is made in Myanmar. The pouch is shaped like a lower-case "n" when closed and an "m" when open. It is 7.9 inches in length, 5.1 inches in width, and 1.4 inches in depth (unfilled)--it expands PILOT CUSTOM HERITAGE 912 WITH FA NIB: A REVIEW The length is comfortable posted (6.18 inches) or unposted (just under 5 inches). What makes the 912 shine is the 14K rhodium-plated FA nib (you can, of course get the pen with other nibs). The FA nib (short for Falcon) has cutouts that look like wings. This design allows the nib to flex when the writer applies pressure to it. SAILOR 1911 STANDARD MUSIC NIB REVIEW Sailor's 1911 barrel is excellent in its own right, with black, rounded ends set off by strongly colored resin barrels. BIC CRISTAL BALLPOINT PEN REVIEW Why has it taken so long for me to review the Bic Cristal ballpoint pen? I have no idea. The fact is, this is a good pen, if not a great one. Released to the public in 1950, it has had a 65-plus year run and shows no signs of slowing down. The design is revered too, with its clear hex-barrel being featured in the Museum of Modern Art. In the early 1950s, Sheaffer faced significant challenges on at least two fronts. First, there was the tremendous popularity of the Parker 51, with its sleek, modern design. Now, my stance on stone paper is well known, but this is a different rock altogether. And I dig it. Waldmann’s build quality is exceptional. The metal barrel is well-balanced and comfortable to use. RYAN KRUSAC LEGEND L~15 IN EBONY AND ABALONE: A REVIEW (_Susan M. Pigott is a fountain pen collector, pen and paperholic, photographer, and professor. You can find more from Susan on her blogScribalishess ._)
One pen maker I’ve not had the pleasure of purchasing from is Ryan Krusac . Ryan is well known for his beautiful wooden pens. He also creates pens from antler, metal, stone and even hand paints or engraves art on his pens. A few weeks ago Ryan offered a bunch of pens for sale in an effort to help fellow pen maker, Jonathan Brooks , with medical expenses. I was very excited about this sale because I’ve wanted to buy a Ryan Krusac pen for some time. This seemed like the perfect opportunity. I watched his live Instagram feed and was instantly drawn to a pen made of Japanese Elm. Unfortunately, I was too slow making a decision, and someone else nabbed that beautiful pen. Although the last thing I needed was another black pen, I love the look of Ryan’s ebony wood pens with abalone or turquoise finials. So, before I lost another pen to someone quicker than me, I clicked “buy” and landed a Legend L-15 with abalone finials. The pen arrived within a few days of purchase. It was enclosed in asilky black kimono.
The Legend L-15 is the second largest version in the Legend collection with a 15mm barrel. The entire pen barrel and cap is made of ebony wood, which is not lacquered. The color isn’t really a black black but rather a dark brown. Up close, you can see the wood grain unique to the pen. One of the great characteristics of a wooden pen is how it smells. Put it close to your nose, and you breathe in the essence of the tree from which it was made. Acrylic, plastic, resin, and even celluloid pens (which have an odor, but not necessarily a nice one) don’t offer this special treat. Plus, as the pen is used the oils in my hand will penetrate the wood and it will develop a beautiful sheen. My Legend has an elegant, simple profile with no clip and no metal parts. There’s a tiny step down from the cap to the barrel, and the wood is smooth and warms to my hand. The only mark on the pen is the subtle Ryan Krusac logo. Of course, what sets this pen apart (besides the wood) is the abalone. Both finials are flush with the wood and exhibit glorious colors. The Legend is a medium to large-sized pen with a cartridge/converter filling system. In length, I would call it a medium pen, measuring 5.4 inches/137mm capped, 5 inches/128mm uncapped, and 6.8 inches/173mm posted. It’s girth (15mm) might make it seem like a large pen for people with smaller hands, but the grip is only 11.8mm, so it’s quite comfortable to write with (and I have tiny hands). The pen weighs only 17 grams with ink, unposted. I chose a steel 1.1mm stub nib. The nib is decorated with a bit of scroll work and the Ryan Krusac logo, but I believe this is a standard JoWo nib. It writes smoothly and the tines are perfectly aligned. I inked it with Colorverse Rainy Day ink (review coming soon), which is a bit dry. But, the ink has nice shading properties demonstrated bythe stub nib.
I am quite pleased with my first Ryan Krusac fountain pen--I say “first” because I’m still hoping to get my hands on a Japanese Elm one of these days. You can purchase pens directly from Ryan’s website . Prices vary depending on the collection, materials, pen size, and nib choice. You can even have a pen custom designed just for you. (_I purchased this Ryan Krusac Legend with my own funds._) ------------------------- _Enjoy reading The Pen Addict? DINGBATS A5 WILDLIFE BLUE WHALE NOTEBOOK REVIEW (_Sarah Read is an author, editor, yarn artist, and pen/paper/ink addict. You can find more about her at her websiteand on Twitter
. And check out her latest book,Out of Water
, now
available where books are sold!_) Earth day is this week! I feel that makes it an excellent time to feature a sustainable maker of stationery goods, and I'm totally falling for this Dingbats notebook.
The Dingbats company carries some impressive environmental credentials, including the Mark of the Forest Stewardship Council. They are
entirely green and vegan and recyclable, and their website has several fancy environmental certificates. This makes my heart happy, as I often feel the weight of my notebook consumption weighing on myshoulders.
A lot of times, when I go for an eco-friendly notebook, I'm sacrificing some other preferred quality. Usually that is the paper. I don't find many fountain pen friendly notebooks that are also green. Well, now I have. In fact, this paper is more than just friendly--it's phenomenal. According to their site, they are the oldest established paper company in Lebanon. This paper is 100gsm silk cream, acid-free, and fsc-certified. I'm not even sure what all of that means, but I can tell you that the performance is excellent. I tried a whole cup full of pens, and it handles everything. There was some show-through with a sharpie, but it wasn't even a full bleed-through. There was no feathering, and it showed shading nicely. This is dreamy paper to havein any notebook.
Each of the 96 sheets is micro-perforated. They're sturdy enough as pages, but can be cleanly removed where needed. This notebook comes with either 7mm lines, 5mm dot grid, 5mm grid, or blank. The over is vegan leather, with a satisfying pebble texture to it. The book is called the Blue Whale, but it has what looks more like a dolphin debossed in the center of the cover. It has an elastic closure. Inside, there is a name page with a decorated endpaper--this one with tiny adorable fishies. At the back is a generously expanding pocket. There is a single ribbon bookmark (other of their designs have a double). There is also an elastic pen holder. It's narrow, but expands enough to hold a big pen. It does not have an index page or page numbers, but since the pages are removable, that makes sense. Overall, this is a well-made, and responsibly-made notebook. They have a number of cute designs, with elephants, tigers, deer, hippos, ducks, kangaroos...and an ecosystem series with some beautiful silhouettes. There are quite a few thatcatch my eye.
They are not inexpensive at $19.95, but I
don't think they are at all overpriced. For the quality, build, number of pages, and features, I think that is a very fair price. And their commitment to the environment is priceless.Happy Earth day!
