EST. 1868: THE FOSSIL THAT FUELLED A DEADLY DISASTER est. 1868: The fossil that fuelled a deadly disaster. The worst workplace disaster in New Zealand occurred 123 years ago when an explosion tore through Westland’s Brunner Mine. The innocuous-looking fossil plant ( Cassiophyllum phaseolitoides ), on display in est. 1868, comes from strata from the Grey River where the Brunner Mine was located. THE CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF MATARIKI FOR NORTHERN MĀORI The Cultural Significance of Matariki for Northern Māori. Tāngata ora ki te whenua. People’s well-being on Earth. THE TUNNELWEB SPIDER This native, endemic spider is commonly found around Dunedin and probably lives in your garden. The tunnelweb spider’s body can be 30 mm in length and it can have a total leg span around 50 mm. Their distinctive cephalothorax (the fused head and thorax) is leathery and reddy-brown in colour, while their abdomen and legs are dark. Of the fossils recovered from Foulden Maar, the oldest whitebait fish fossils from 23 million years ago were a significant discovery. They are some of the most well-preserved and intact specimens ever found, and enabled scientists to name a new extinct species, Galaxias effusus, based on the discovery. EST. 1868: THE FOSSIL THAT FUELLED A DEADLY DISASTER est. 1868: The fossil that fuelled a deadly disaster. The worst workplace disaster in New Zealand occurred 123 years ago when an explosion tore through Westland’s Brunner Mine. The innocuous-looking fossil plant ( Cassiophyllum phaseolitoides ), on display in est. 1868, comes from strata from the Grey River where the Brunner Mine was located. THE TUNNELWEB SPIDER This native, endemic spider is commonly found around Dunedin and probably lives in your garden. The tunnelweb spider’s body can be 30 mm in length and it can have a total leg span around 50 mm. Their distinctive cephalothorax (the fused head and thorax) is leathery and reddy-brown in colour, while their abdomen and legs are dark.
