The Navy's state-of-the-art training college (1873-1997) 1873 the Naval College in Portsmouth acquired the buildings of the old Royal Hospital for Seamen and the Royal Naval College was born. It became the most highly rated naval training college in Europe, with a reputation for academic rigour. VISIT THE PAINTED HALL The beautiful Painted Hall is the highlight of any visit to the Old Royal Naval College. Painted in the early 18th century by Sir James Thornhill, the hall features 40,000 square feet of walls and ceilings. LIFE AS A GREENWICH PENSIONER Life as a Greenwich Pensioner. At its peak, the Royal Hospital housed over 2,700 naval veterans mostly invalided out of the Navy after sustaining debilitating injuries. Due to overwhelming demand, Gaia is returning for a full month in pride of place in the magnificent Painted Hall, along with an exciting series of extended opening hours on Fridays. VISIT THE PAINTED HALL The beautiful Painted Hall is the highlight of any visit to the Old Royal Naval College. Painted in the early 18th century by Sir James Thornhill, the hall features 40,000 square feet of walls and ceilings. The Royal Hospital Chapel was built by English architect Thomas Ripley (1682-1758) following designs by Sir Christopher Wren, for the use of the staff and pensioners of the Royal Hospital.
