As of November 15th, 2017, a new set of requirements for the creation of top-level domains has been issued. Please ensure you have read through this new page before proposing a new top-level domain. AUTOMATIC OPENNIC ZONE GENERATION Getting the script. This script will automatically generate a file for BIND9 that lists all of the OpenNIC zones and their master servers. The conf file needs to be located in the same directory as the script. For convenience, you may wish to place these files in /etc/bind/ (or wherever your distribution places your BIND9 configuration). OPENNIC OPERATED TOP-LEVEL DOMAINS OpenNIC Operated Top-Level Domains. These are the Top-Level Domains ( TLDs) which are currently being served by OpenNIC, are being constructed with the approval of OpenNIC or which have been proposed to OpenNIC. DNSCrypt is a protocol specifically designed to encrypt and authenticate DNS communication between a DNS client and a DNS resolver. It uses cryptographic signatures to verify that responses originate from the chosen DNS resolver and haven't been tampered with.. Some of OpenNIC Tier 2 servers support DNSCrypt. In order to get started with DNSCrypt at OpenNIC, you need five things: OPENNIC OPERATED TOP-LEVEL DOMAINS OpenNIC Operated Top-Level Domains. These are the Top-Level Domains ( TLDs) which are currently being served by OpenNIC, are being constructed with the approval of OpenNIC or which have been proposed to OpenNIC. There are links to the appropriate Web and email contacts for those which are currently accepting domain name registrations. SETTING UP A TIER 1 SERVER Setting up a OpenNIC Tier 1 server, requires creating slave zones for all the TLDs within the OpenNIC name-space. Each zone is presented below. This document will be updated as new zones are created. This page will show how to configure BIND9 to automatically update available TLDs and their master servers. In this example BIND9configuration

SLAVED ZONES WITH BIND9 This guide was copied directly from the old wiki. It likely needs some updates for the latest BIND software and OpenNIC configuration. If this guide doesn't work, try using the srvzone script.. For those wishing to set up a more robust local nameserver, or if you plan on running a public Tier 1 or Tier 2 server for OpenNIC, configuring BIND with slave zones is the preferred method. The reason for this is mostly to stop spreading malware and stopping highly illegal or abusive behavior on the domain level that would otherwise negatively affect the reputation of the OpenNIC project. TIER 2 SECURITY MEASURES First, you need to get a hex-dump of the packets you wish to block. For this, you will use tcpdump: The option -c10 specifies that you only want to dump out 10 packets at a time. The portion after the interface specifies that we only want to look at incoming packets on UDP port 53, and ignore outgoing packets. WHY YOU SHOULDN'T PICK TIER 2 ANYCAST SERVERS Tier 2 anycast servers rarely go down due to the nature of anycast. There may exist up to tens, hundreds or thousands of points of presence for the anycast network and in case one of them goes down, traffic gets immediately re-routed to the next shortest-path server inthe network.

As of November 15th, 2017, a new set of requirements for the creation of top-level domains has been issued. Please ensure you have read through this new page before proposing a new top-level domain. There are links to the appropriate Web and email contacts for those which are currently accepting domain name registrations. TIER-2 SERVER HISTORY Click a country-code to expand/collapse the list of servers. Click on a server name or IP to run detailed testing of that machine. Click a server's bar to view the history of that server. SETTING UP A TIER 2 SERVER Automated Slave Zones. There are some automated scripts that allow you to keep your slave BIND server always up-to-date, often requiring just a single command or minor configuration to get up and running. This is the recommended way to setup a new Tier 2 server DNS BLACKLISTING API DNS Blacklisting API. OpenNIC implemented a DNS blacklisting API for Tier 2 operators to block certain domains from being resolved.
