Public defenders request the release of all non-violent offenders in jail due to coronavirus 16 March 2020 The Lens, March 12, 2020 - In the midst of a rising number of coronavirus cases in Louisiana, the Orleans Parish Public Defenders are asking the Criminal District Court to immediately release from jail people being held on non-violent offenses and ensure inmates and detainees are safe. ORLEANS PUBLIC DEFENDERS Orleans Public Defenders. Arrested, Now What? Within 48 hours of being arrested, you will have a first appearance in front of a judge. During this time, the judge will determine if there is probable cause for the charge (s), a bond amount, and if the Orleans Public Defenders is appointed to defend the case. Due to the ongoing threats of COVID-19, courts across Orleans Parish have effectively closed. The health, wellbeing and safety of our staff, clients and their communities are paramount. To minimize the risk of further spreading of the virus, our offices are closed.
