The life and work of Bradford artists, past and present. This non-commercial website is an illustrated guide to professional artists past and present who were born, or have made their home, in what is now known as the Bradford Metropolitan District – including David Hockney. The aim of this guide is to collate information about local 'THE ROAD ACROSS THE WOLDS' BY DAVID HOCKNEY When David Hockney’s Yorkshire landscape paintings were first shown at the Royal Academy in 2012, they attracted mixed reviews. ABLETT, THOMAS ROBERT Thomas Robert Ablett was a pioneer in teaching art and developed his ideas whilst working as an Art Master at Bradford Grammar School, leading to the formation of The Royal Drawing Society. He was also a painter who exhibited work at the Royal Academy and with other prestigious institutions. * Thomas was born in June 1848 in Somers Town, North London, the son of a book seller. He moved to London in the mid 1890s to study at the South London Technical Art School in Lambeth School of Art for two years. Percy Monkman, (1892 – 1986), was a prolific watercolour artist who painted predominantly Dales and Pennine landscapes, especially Wharfedale and the Bronte country, and also urban scenes around Bradford.He also painted in oils and gouache.
