The Grist Mill. In 1682 Nicholas Newlin acquired a 500-acre land grant from William Penn. His son Nathaniel built the grist mill on this land in 1704, first to produce flour for the community and then for export. It was owned by the Newlin family until 1817 when William Trimble purchased the mill. Later, it was owned by members of the Sharpless VISIT US – NEWLIN GRIST MILL Visit Us. This year, we will be hosting two seatings, with a maximum number of 25 people per seating. Tavern Night is a one-of-a-kind evening of 18th-century food, drink, and music. BLACKSMITHING CLASSES Suitable for beginners with no experience. All participants must be 18 years of age or older. Cost per class: $240/person. All 2021 class sessions are full. Session 1: Around the World with Newlin – SOLD OUT. June 28-July 2, 8:30am-12:30pm. From the tallest forests to the driest deserts, the world is an amazing place! Join Newlin Grist Mill for a week-long journey from the tropical rainforest, to the polar ice sheets, and then deep under the sea. On our journey, we will meet amazing animals AN IDEA FINALLY TAKES SHAPE After purchasing the Mill and four acres, Elizabeth and Mortimer plunged into restoring the mill. With the advice and assistance of L. C. Watkins, an 80-year-old millwright from Virginia, and local carpenters, the mill machinery was put into working order. A permit was acquired for fee fishing, and the first load of trout arrived inMarch 1959.
TOOLS OF THE TRADE: CHISELS These are Moxon’s joiner’s chisels. Former (C.1) A coarser tool used before the paring chisel, its helve (handle) is struck with a mallet to drive it into the work and remove large amounts of stock. Paring (C.2) A very finely ground, extremely sharp chisel used to clean up any irregularities left by the former.NEWLIN GRIST MILL

FISHING – NEWLIN GRIST MILL PLEASE NOTE: Pond fishing will remain CLOSED until further notice. E. Mortimer Newlin, founder of the Nicholas Newlin Foundation, was an enthusiastic fly fisherman who immediately recognized the possibilities of the trout stream – the West Branch of the Chester Creek – that runs through the property. The stream is reserved for the use of fly fishing members for a seasonal fee. Stream fishing is open every day from the opening of the Delaware County, Pennsylvania trout fishing season to December 31st.. In order to fish in the stream, members and guests need both a Pennsylvania fishing license and a Newlin Grist Mill fly fishingmembership.
PHOTOGRAPHY POLICIES Professional Photography Policy. Formal photography is subject to a site fee of $50.00 (paid prior to the session) and must be scheduled through the Visitor Center a minimum of 24 hours in advance. A completed contract (all lines filled in legibly and signed) must be submitted to Newlin Grist Mill and approved by the site’s rentalcoordinator
