THE HISTORY OF PIT PONIES Mostly used in coalmines in the 1800s to mid-1900s, pit ponies did a variety of jobs, both on the surface and underground. The ponies that worked aboveground typically measured 1.7 metres (16 hands), and you’d usually expect to see them transporting coal and mining materials such as timber for roof supports.DRAWN FROM THE PITS

The Garforth Lamp. The Flame-safety lamp was the main way of testing for gas in the 19th and 20th century. By looking at the shape and colour of the flame, a skilled miner could tell the amount of dangerous gases in the air. To test the lighter-than-air gas, you needed to lift the lamp to the ceiling which at times made testingdifficult.
HOW IS COAL MINED?
Modern deep mining in the UK uses the longwall method. Large, coal-cutting machines remove coal from a long coal face. The coal face is the section of the seam that is being worked.MINE GASES - HOME
