OF SPRING | MY FAVOURITE FUNNIES Reserve a copy at your newsdealer for April 25 ’40. Broadcast on the 26th of April ’70, the elaborate TV special RAQUEL! starring Raquel Welch, with guest stars Tom Jones, Bob Hope and John Wayne–filmed mainly in Mexico and featuring Bob Mackey fashions–this super spectacular cost 350,OOO in 1970 dollars. A CONVENTION OF PAPER DOLLS The most ready available funny book for this enterprise was the legendary SUGAR AND SPIKE.. From the time I was the age of Spike himself, these play toys were already extant–a fossilized record of whole issues that existed before I emerged from the primeval ooze–the funny books themselves having been traded or thrown onto the firepits of my forebears. X – ANOTHER YOU–REVUE janet waldo. Born February 4 ’24, Janet Waldo was a young starlet who appeared in numerable bit parts–and a few leading roles–in the late ’30s and early ’40s. Her big break was in radio, where she voiced many characters, but her leading role was as 15 year-old Corliss Archer on the long running radio program MEET CORLISS ARCHER (Shirley Temple played Corliss in the movies, while Ann X – CAN YOU DRAW, TOO? the primal primer. Going back as far as I can remember, I always liked to draw. Sometimes I drew on the walls–which my parents didn’t like. When we went to visit our aunt and uncle, after the big feast, the grown-ups and the older kids would sit around the fold-out card tables and play games like Hearts or Bridge or Cribbage. George Tibbles and Ramey Idriss wrote THE WOODY WOODPECKER SONG, which was first recorded by Kay Kyser’s orchestra with Harry Babbitt doing the laugh and Gloria Wood singing the tune. Released in 1948, it was a huge hit. It was even nominated for an Oscar. In a store near the doctor’s office, after I had shown stoic courage, I sought out my prize. After considering all the available options, I chose a giant-sized STUMBO TINYTOWN comic book. DC 80 PAGE GIANTS were children of the ‘60s. X – CAN YOU DRAW, TOO? the primal primer. Going back as far as I can remember, I always liked to draw. Sometimes I drew on the walls–which my parents didn’t like. When we went to visit our aunt and uncle, after the big feast, the grown-ups and the older kids would sit around the fold-out card tables and play games like Hearts or Bridge or Cribbage.AS YOU LIKE IT

The two comics I selected both had Superman on the cover. These turned out to be both May ’71 cover-dated issues: SUPERMAN 237 and ACTION COMICS 400. [According to Mike’s Amazing World of DC Comics, both those comics went on sale in March, but comics always went on sale later in Vancouver and–I imagine–on the ferry the comics went on sale even later and maybe stayed on sale MEISTER EDER FOREVER! The radio plays, books and records all tell the story of Pumuckl’s friendship with Meister Eder, a master craftsman–the only person that can see the Kobold. Pumuckl lives in Meister Eder’s workshop and Eder has his apartment above the workshop. Franz Eder is an older man, unmarried, with no children of his own.
