SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 2014 AN ETHICAL ISSUE: MILLIMETER WAVE AIT AIT stands for Advanced Imaging Technology. Millimeter Wave AIT units are heavily implemented in airports throughout the USA. Even the Fargo and Minneapolis airports have implemented them. When you go through security in an airport, you are more than likely going through one of these scanners (as seen below). This machine works by bouncing electromagnetic waves off your body. Millimeter Wave Unit When this device first came out there was a lot of debate if this device infringed on our rights. It's no wonder people were in an uproar if you take a look at the picture below. It is basically the equivalent of seeing someone naked. Of course you can opt out of going through the machine but you have to go through a different sort of screening which includes a thorough pat down. Who knows which is less invasive? Another concern was taking images of children which could violate children pornography laws. Of course the TSA promised that they "cannot store, print, transmit or save the image, and the image is automatically deleted from the system”(1). However, a Millimeter Wave Unit machine was found that had 35,000 images stored on it. 100 of these images were leaked onto the internet. If they found one machine with stored images on it, how many others could there be? Eventually the TSA decided to switch the software to show less invasive pictures. If something is a threat the image on the left is shown with a generic figure of a person. If nothing is found then the image on the right is shown. So if they changed the software to be less invasive, then why is there still privacy issues? The operators see these images but the "naked" pictures are still there and could potentially still be stored (if we know anything about our government they will be stored just in case). So basically they make it seem better by showing the operator this image but actually still capturingthe other images.
How good is this machine? There have already been people pushing it to its limits and finding it ineffective. In March of 2012 Jonathan Corbett was able to get a metal box through the machines in two airports. Also, another study showed how a terrorist could get explosives through by taping it to their stomach. Overall, it seems like the TSA is giving the illusion of safety and taking away our privacy at the same time. Just because we have the technology to do something does not mean that we should.Sources:

TUESDAY, APRIL 8, 2014NEW USB 3.1 TYPE-C
The standard USB shown in purple below is what the industry is currently using. A new version of the USB is going to be coming out which is called USB 3.1 Type-C (shown below in black). Currently it is still in the design phase though the specifications should be completed sometime in July and the Type-C is expected to be available to buy later this year. The new USB Type C is similar to Apple's product of the Lightning I/O (which came out in 2012) that is reversible. The Type C is also reversible. The user will no longer need to worry about having to figure out which way a USB goes in. Also, the cable will be the same on both sides (both male connectors) so the user can connect either end to their device. The Type C is expected to become the new standard for computers and phones. Currently computers typically use Type-A and phones use the Micro-B (see photo above). The Type C is expected to replace the current Types. The new standard USB Type-C port is smaller in size and different in shape. The prong of the USB Type C will be 8.3 x 2.5 mm which will be around half the size of what a Standard Type-A port is. Below is an idea of what the Type-C port will look like (on the left) compared to what the current USB Type-A port currently is (on the right). Devices will be able to be made more compactly because of the smaller port size. Eventually the Type-C is expected to overtake the industry. However, computers will probably have both port types until the Type-C actually does. The new 3.1 USB is expected to be faster. The previous 3.0 USB had a transfer rate of 5 Gbps. The new 3.1 USB will probably have a transfer rate of around 10 Gbps. The Type-C USB will have the following features. The USB will have a click that the user can hear if the USB is plugged in correctly. Also, the new design will support higher transfer rates for when the transfer rate (which will be at 10 Gbps) increases. The new USB will still be able to charge devices. Also, the USB will be able to be plugged/unplugged 10,000 times. The Type-C USB will have many new features from its reversibility to its increase in transfer rate. Not all the specifications are solidified yet and we will know more as new announcements are made. It is expected to eventually take over the USB industry though the current USB ports and connectors will still be around for awhile.Sources:

SUNDAY, APRIL 6, 2014 A TECH REVIEW: THE MAX 660 SWITCHED CAPACITOR VOLTAGE CONVERTER Top View of Connection Diagram The MAX 660 is a chip with the ability to invert voltage or double positive voltage. It is commonly applied when using a battery supply as the voltage for a circuit. For example, if you had 5 volts from a battery supply and wanted to get 10 volts you could do this by using this chip. Also, it can take a voltage such as 5 volts and invert it. In other words, you could get -5 volts. On the right is an image of what pin on the MAX 660 is what. The basic pins to remember is GND is ground, V+ is the positive voltage supply, OUT is the output, and FC is the frequency controller. The MAX 660 is, for the most part, user friendly. The datasheet that goes along with this chip draws circuits out for the user to follow. It is pretty specific on how to use this chip. It also has lots of extra information in the datasheet on how changing certain values of components connected to the circuit will change other specific factors. The inverter circuit drawn below can be setup this way as long as the user is not using any sort of audio in the rest of the project. This is a little bit confusing to the user who just jumps in and builds the circuit without reading through the entire datasheet. Although the datasheet says to connect pin 8 to pin 1 to get a frequency outside the hearing range(80 kHz), this is not shown in this circuit setup and can be easily overlooked. It would be better if this setup was just drawn with that connection instead of leaving it at the 10 kHz frequency. However, this is only a problem if the user is outputting any sort of sound since the frequency it outputs will be heard when outputting the audio. Voltage Inverter Circuit Setup This chip has only certain power ranges that it can handle. For many circuits the ranges are more than adequate. However, for the ones outside this range this chip would not work. For the voltage inverter, the range of power is 1.5 V to 5.5 V which means when inverted, the chip can output from around -5.5 V to -1.5 V. The voltage doubler circuit, as seem below, has a range of 2.5 V to 5.5 V resulting in an output voltage range of around 5 V to 11 V. If the user needs an output voltage that is not in this range this chip will not work. Voltage doubler setup (only for positive voltage) This chip is easy to find online and order. All the user needs to do is search for MAX660 on a website such as digikey.com (typical ordering site for Electrical Engineering students) and pick out the chip they want. One of the options the user can pick is through hole or surface mount. Through hole is nice when bread boarding or for putting it on a Printed Circuit Board (especially since the size of the chip is very typical and easy to find the layout for the PCB) and surface mount is also good for a PCB though sometimes it is a little harder to solder on. Another great feature is that this chip is affordable. It costs around $7.86 for a through hole chip and $8.25 for a surface mount chip. A breadboard Through hole chip Overall, this is a very useful chip. It can be applied to lots of different circuits that need a power supply inverter or positive voltage doubler. Also, the setup for this chip is very specific and to the point which makes it easy to use. This is definitely a chip thatyou should try out.
