TEACHING TAKES TIME... Teaching takes time. LET’S UNCOVER WHAT’S OVERWHELMING YOU, FIND SOLUTIONS, AND GET YOU EXCITED ABOUT TEACHING. For example, we use fractions to know how much of an ingredient to use when we bake or cook foods. Fractions are also used when telling time. (30 min. is 1/2 an hour. Lunch is at a half past 11:00) Fractions are HOW TO TEACH SCIENCE EFFECTIVELY Throughout this process, it’s good to discuss the importance of keeping accurate records. It’s also important to spend time talking about conclusions + how scientists form them. Before concluding the unit, set aside time to conduct a complete lab from start to finish. Even if this means the lab takes 2 days. FUN GAMES: GOOD FOR RELIEVING TESTING ANXIETY In Florida, 3rd-grade testing is a BIG DEAL! You see for my poor 3rd graders, their performance determines whether or not they have to repeat the year. That’s a lot of pressure to put on an 8 year-old. No wonder there’s so many kiddos with testing anxiety #sonotfair Every year, a few days before “testing day”, I like to read the story The Big Test by Julie Danneberg. She’s also the AREA & PERIMETER: A HANDS ON APPROACH Last week we wrapped up our unit on area and perimeter. Let me just say that it was a breath of fresh air after struggling through elapsed time. I think by this point we ALL needed an easier topic to tackle. I know I sure did! Luckily enough, area and perimeter was the next concept on our pacing guides. I knew this topic tends to come easier for 3rd graders. These are also skills that kids TEACHING MOOD WITH MUSIC Especially since many of us choose music to listen to depending on how we are feeling at the moment. I began by introducing the term MOOD with the poster on the left. We then had a discussion on the types of music we like to listen to and how it makes us feel. Students came up with words such as happy, sad, excited, scared, etc. TEACHING KIDS TO BE PROBLEM SOLVERS IN 5 EASY STEPS Develop a Plan of Action: The next step is to brainstorm possible solutions! Try to get them to list at least 2-3 and discuss the benefits of using different strategies. Encourage them to accept every idea during a brainstorming session, even if it seems silly. “If you think it, write it” is what I like to tell them. SPACE: EARTH, MOON, & THE SUN Space is a fascinating topic that attracts adults and children alike! It is also a topic that can be quite confusing for our kids especially since much of what they know is centered around books that they’ve read or cartoons that they’ve watched on TV. In my classroom, I usually like to begin a new topic of study with something familiar. That’s why I usually start off our space unit READ ALOUD BOOKS FOR TEACHING ABOUT PLANTS One of my favorite science units to teach in the spring is my All About Plant Unit! I’ve decided to focus this post on a topic that is extremely difficult for our 3rd-grade babies to understand FRACTIONS! Besides elapsed time, year after year I find my students having a difficult time mastering fractions. It’s also a topic that we need to make they understand because it is the foundation for future math concepts. In other words, if our kiddos leave us with a weak SPACE: EARTH, MOON, & THE SUN Space is a fascinating topic that attracts adults and children alike! It is also a topic that can be quite confusing for our kids especially since much of what they know is centered around books that they’ve read or cartoons that they’ve watched on TV. In my classroom, I usually like to begin a new topic of study with something familiar. That’s why I usually start off our space unit HOW TO WRITE A PARAGRAPH 6 Steps to Teach paragraph writing. 1. Understand the Prompt. Before students can start writing a paragraph, they need to understand the prompt. They need to identify the topic they’re going to write about and the purpose for writing. I always begin by teaching my students to read the prompt more than once. The first time is to get the gist HOW TO IMPLEMENT I-READY IN YOUR CLASSROOM Well, Curriculum Associates, the makers of i-Ready, recommends that students use i-Ready for a target of 45 minutes per subject per week (with a range of 30-49 minutes). My school districts requirement is a little different. According to my district, students performing on grade level must complete 45 min. of weekly instruction per subject. Those that are 1 year below grade level, complete ANIMAL CLASSIFICATION CRAFT-IVITY A few weeks ago, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Store contacted me about taking part in their #teachercreativity Blog Hop. That’s when I got an idea about creating a craft-ivity to add to my upcoming animal unit. You see every year my 3rd graders and I spend some time learning about the different animal groups. We read books, watch videos, play animal classification games online, (click here, and EARTH’S ORBIT MISCONCEPTION This week we started our unit on space and we’ve been having SO.MUCH.FUN learning all about the Sun, the Earth, and the moon! Can I just tell you how impressed I am by how much information my kiddos have learned in just a few short day It just goes to prove that when kids are engaged, learning takes place To begin our unit, I decided to tackle one of the biggest MISCONCEPTIONS I noticed 5 THINGS YOU NEED TO DO BEFORE TESTING BEGINS Rearrange Desks: In order to give kids enough time to get comfortable with their “testing seats”, rearrange their desks at least a week or two in advance. This will give them a chance to get used to the new seating arrangement. Perhaps they’ve never sat by a window or thecomputers before.
