Soil testing can provide information on your soil’s texture, pH, salinity and the level of essential plant nutrients and fertility. This information will be especially helpful if you are starting a new garden. Soil testing may also help you learn why plants are not growing well in an existing garden. To keep voles out, surround the garden area with a one foot high fence made of galvanized ¼ inch mesh hardware cloth and bury it 6 to 10 inches in the ground. Rabbits require a 4 foot high fence made of 1 inch or smaller mesh chicken wire or hardware cloth. It also needs to extend 10 inches underground. PLANT A SEED WATCH IT GROW To collect soil for testing, dig a small hole 6-8 inches deep with a trough and collect a thin slice of soil from one side of the hole. Put the soil in a bucket and collect more samples from several locations in the garden. Mix the samples together to produce a representative sample from your garden. If you use a commercial testing lab, ask if PLANT A SEED WATCH IT GROW The primary macronutrients are Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). Nitrogen promotes green leaves and foliage growth. Phosphorous stimulates healthy root growth and helps with the formation of flowers, seeds, and fruit. Potassium is required for proper development of flowers and fruit, ensuring good size, color,and quantity.

It provides a setting for: WELCOME – PLANT A SEED, WATCH IT GROW Welcome to Plant a Seed, Watch it Grow, an online guide developed by the School Garden Committee of the Master Gardeners Association of San Diego County to help you plan, design, and maintain a school garden. It will guide you from learning how school gardens benefit students to integrating curriculum with outdoor, hands-on experiences. HISTORY AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Acknowledgements. This calendar should show when seeds for each variety should be planted, whether they are to be planted in pots or directly into the garden, the number of days for germination, the length of time until harvest and even a fertilizing schedule for the plants.
