Roueche was a journalist who worked for the New Yorker for almost 50 years, and for most of that time, he was responsible for the column “The Annals of Medicine,” which was created for him.SARS ARCHIVES
My last two posts looked at the problems that might be caused by hospital spread of the new coronavirus, based on what happened during the early days of SARS 10 years ago. Hospital spread of this new virus is a real concern; it was first identified, retrospectively, in an outbreak in a hospital in Jordan a year ago, and international concern really picked up after the acknowledgement of a THE ENEMY WITHIN: A NEW SUPERBUG, KPC/CRKP Remember NDM-1, the “Indian supergene” that created a media furor last fall and then fell below the news horizon? This is worse. I have a story in the April Scientific American (“The Enemy Within,” just previewed online) about a new and very troubling form of antibiotic resistance: Carbapenem resistance, spreading through Gram-negativebacteria such as
WHAT VACCINE REFUSAL REALLY COSTS: MEASLES IN ARIZONA Every once in a while, there’s news of a measles outbreak. On the surface, they don’t involve large numbers of cases — there’s one in Minneapolis right now that has racked up 21 cases so far — and so people seem to wonder why these outbreaks are such a big deal. Here’s one reason why: ALMOST-UNTREATABLE GONORRHEA: PROOF THAT IT'S HERE Since the early 2000s, there have simultaneously been signs that drug-resistant gonorrhea is spreading from the Pacific Rim -- Japan and Hawaii -- to North America, Europe and the rest of the world. Now, a report from researchers in Canada suggests that standard gonorrhea treatment is not working in some patients there. THE POULTRY INDUSTRY RESPONDS TO AN ACTIVIST FARMER Last week I broke the story that contract chicken farmer Craig Watts, who had let animal-welfare activists film in the barns where he raises poultry for Perdue Farms, filed for whistleblower protection against the company because he felt retaliated against. In his complaint — made to the Department of Labor under the provisions of the Food Safety Modernization Act — Watts said that the NEW CDC EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGN ON CA-MRSA, AIMED AT PARENTS This morning, the CDC is launching a “National MRSA Education Initiative” aimed at raising awareness among parents and average health-care professionals — not academic center researchers so much as front-line nurses, NPs, PAs and others who are likely to be the first set of eyes on a community MRSA infection.. ANTIBIOTICS CHANGED THE WORLD. THEN WE GAVE THEM TO THE ANIMALS WE EAT. THIS IS THE STORY OF WHAT HAPPENED NEXT. In this provocative narrative, acclaimed journalist Maryn McKenna reveals the fascinating history of chicken—and how the common backyard bird became an industrial commodity impacting human health around the world. Crucial to its meteoric rise: the routine use of antibiotics, a practice that would transform agriculture, change the world's eating habits, and contribute to the deadly rise of drug-resistant infections around the globe. Bringing us on an extraordinary journey from the vast poultry farms of the United States to laboratories, kitchens and sidewalk markets around the world, McKenna reveals how economic, political and cultural forces converged to make America's favorite meat a hidden danger—and how companies, activists, farmers and chefs are carving a path back to better, safer food.
