Silence - Water Flames takes cues from my Water Flames series based on Dante and Water Flames - Mark in the Four Holy Gospels frontispieces, and adopts it to my current Silence motif. Over 60 layers of special Japanese vermillion are used. This vermillion originally belonged to Seison Maeda, a Nihonga master, and later inherited by Hiroshi Senju. THE BOOK | THE FOUR HOLY GOSPELS The Four Holy Gospels. The Four Holy Gospels is an exquisitely designed and produced edition of the four canonical Gospels in the English Standard Version, published in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the King James Version (KJV) Bible in 1611. The book contains five primary frontispieces (depicted here) as well ashundreds of hand
CHARIS-KAIROS
From the Artist. I painted the five large-scale images that illuminate this volume, The Four Holy Gospels, using water-based Nihonga materials (Japanese style painting), with my focus on the tears of Christ (John 11) – tears shed for the atrocities of the past century and for our present darkness. Charis is a series of paintings I did in2008
LUKE | THE FOUR HOLY GOSPELS The title of this work, based on a well known tale of the lost son in Luke 15, is taken’s from pastor Timothy Keller’s book, Prodigal God. The visual complexity of the work depicts Fujimura’s own inner struggle between legalism of religion (the elder brother) and the “recklessly spendthrift” nature of the Father’s love in thestory.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
MARK | THE FOUR HOLY GOSPELS The Water Flames series depicts the way in which flames not only consume, but ultimately sanctify. These works recall the visual language of the apocalyptic – for example, the moody paintings of the American artist Mark Rothko (1903-1970) - using Japanese vermillion, gold, platinum powders and cochineal (An Indian dye made from an cochineal insect). MATTHEW | THE FOUR HOLY GOSPELS Original Size: 60 H x 48 W x 2 in. “Consider the Lilies” is done with over sixty layers of finely pulverized precious minerals (azurite and malachite), oyster shell white, and painted with sumi ink that has been cured for over a century, as well as gold and platinum powders, and mixed hide glue, to adhere the materials onto the hand-pulled WWW.MAKOTOFUJIMURA.COM 301 Moved Permanently. nginx/1.18.0 THE FOUR HOLY GOSPELS The Four Holy Gospels is an exquisitely designed and produced edition of the four canonical Gospels in the English Standard Version, published in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the King James Version (KJV) Bible in 1611. Charis is a series of paintings I did in2008
