On the condition that he and his wife Jean MacArthur could be buried in the Rotunda of the museum, MacArthur entered into a partnership with the City of Norfolk. The resulting MacArthur Memorial opened in January of1964.

GENERAL MACARTHUR'S HONOR GUARD The Honor Guard continued on after General MacArthur’s departure, although with some changes. In 1953 the Guard expanded from an Army unit to include representatives from all four branches of the U.S. armed forces. In 1957 the Guard was disbanded. Nearly 2,000 men served in General MacArthur’s Honor Guard during its six-year existence. MACARTHUR'S LIMOUSINE As Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers and the architect of the rebuilding of Japan after World War II not just any automobile would suffice to be the personal staff car for General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. Thus when the Cadillac assigned for his use began to show its age, the U.S. Army replaced it with a 1950 Chrysler Crown Imperiallimousine.
JOHN CULLEN MURPHY
John Cullen Murphy was a revered artist and cartoonist of his time and of today. He was a historic figure due to his artistry. He was born in New York City May 3, 1919, and he died at the age of 85 in Greenwich, CT. Murphy began art classes at the very early age of nine. NOSE ART OF THE SOUTHWEST PACIFIC AREA Humorous, sarcastic, and outrageously risqué, these examples of nose art of the Southwest Pacific Area can all be found in the vault of the MacArthur Memorial Archives.
