Lovin Soap Studio: Learn to make handcrafted soap! We’ve got all of the resources and training needed for you to learn to make natural handcrafted soap. You can learn by reading our soap making blog, checking out our eBook selection or even taking an online eClass. HOW TO CLEAN UP YOUR HANDCRAFTED SOAP It is so simple to run the peeler over the sharp edges to bevel and clean them up. And a vegetable peeler is cheap! Here is one from Amazon that I like, but you can find one at your local store. To use a vegetable peeler, you simply run it over all of the sharp edges to bevel down a bit. To clarify this for you, label the cosmetic ingredients (if the ingredient is greater than 1% of the formula) in descending order of proportion. List the ingredient’s common name. ESSENTIAL OIL BLENDS FOR SOAP Below are ten blends from my recipe book, Lovin Soap Studio Cold Process Soap Recipe eBook. The book includes a total of 64 essential oil blends. The blends below will fragrance a 32 oz. oil batch of soap, which fits in a 10″ silicone loaf mold (Bramble Berry). COCONUT OIL IN SOAP MAKING One of the most common base oils used in soap making is coconut oil (botanical name Cocos Nucifera Coconut Oil), and there is a purposeful reason for its popularity. Coconut oil helps to produce a bar of soap that has excellent cleaning properties. Most important to the soap maker is the desirable fluffy bubbly factor THE ASH MONSTER: TIPS FOR DEALING WITH ASH ON COLD PROCESS Soda ash (commonly referred to as ash) is a pesky little problem that just about every soap maker has encountered at one time or another. You put your soap to bedwake up in the morning and there is a white powdery layer of “something” blanketing the surface of your soap. HOW TO SUBSTITUTE AN OIL IN A SOAP RECIPE (COLD PROCESS Cold Process Soap Recipe Mod 1. Coconut oil – 44%. Olive oil – 35%. Castor oil – 4%. Rice Bran oil – 5%. Shea butter – 5%. Avocado oil – 7% (You could also use 7% apricot kernel. Or you could even use 3.5% avocado and 3.5% apricot kernel) Mod 2:DISCOUNTING WATER
To calculate a non-discounted water amount use this formula: Water = Lye Amount * 73 / 27. So if your recipe calls for 2 oz of lye: Water = 2 oz lye * 73 / 27. Water = 5.4 oz. I do not recommend using a discounted water solution higher than 40% lye and 60% water (water = lye * 1.5). Please note that using a higher water discount means thatyour
ESSENTIAL OIL AND FRAGRANCE OIL USAGE RATES IN COLD My standard rate for essential oil is .5-1 oz per pound of oil. Rates vary depending on the strength of your oils, but these are good starting off points. You certainly aren’t going to use .5 oz of clove or cinnamon in a soap as that would be too much.
