LOUIS plays a critical role in the instant delivery of information to our faculty, staff, and students across the state and beyond. The Board of Regents will continue to support its mission and commends LOUIS for serving as a national model in providing library information services, empowering research, and promoting collaboration to enhance the academic landscape of post-secondary institutions in Louisiana. Dr. Joseph C. Rallo, Former Commissioner of Higher Education, Louisiana Board of Regents Affordable Learning LOUISiana LOUIS partners libraries and faculty through our Affordable Learning LOUISIana initiative to save students money on education by reducing the costs of instructional materials through the use of eTextbooks, Open Educational Resources (OERs), and other open access materials. Explore Affordable Learning LOUISiana __ LOUIS is an excellent example of what can be accomplished in higher education when all campuses work collaboratively toward a common goal. In this case, the common goal was to enhance access to library and information resources for every student in every college and university in Louisiana, regardless of the size or location of the campus and to do so in the most cost-effective way. It’s success is due to the dedicated efforts of dozens of academic librarians for over 20 years, to the knowledge, experience, and hard work of the LOUIS Team, and to the willingness of the leadership of LSU, especially LSU Libraries and the LSU Computing Center, to make their library and computing resources available to accomplish this important goal forLouisiana.
Dr. Carolyn Hargrave, Vice President for Academic Affairs & Technology Transfer (Retired), LSU System LOUIS has been called the great equalizer because the consortium allows small colleges to offer its students and faculty access to electronic resources to the fullest extent and benefits academic libraries and the state by providing the resources necessary to achieve regional, state, and national accreditations. Suzanne Martin, Head Librarian (Retired), Fletcher Technical CommunityCollege
LOUIS means everything to Elaine P. Nunez Community College. Without the excellent pricing made possible by the collective bargaining by the LOUIS staff, we would be able to afford less than one tenth of the databases and services provided by LOUIS. Students and faculty enjoy credible sources for their assignments. Many faculty members will only accept papers that have been developed by using the databases. Our accreditation depends on the service that LOUIS gives us at ourfingertips.
Richard DeFoe, Librarian, Elaine P. Nunez Community College Since my time as a graduate student at LSU in the 1990s, LOUIS has provided me with unmatched resources and fantastic services that have enabled my research and scholarship to be wide-ranging and thorough. The numerous articles I have published and my two books dealing with Louisiana’s Antebellum and Civil War history drew heavily from the electronic scholarly resources, interlibrary loan, and remote access to sources which only LOUIS can provide. There is no single state-wide initiative that can match the power of LOUIS to serve the people of Louisiana. As a faculty member at a private college the ability to draw upon the tremendous pool of resources in a cost-effective way ensures that my scholarship will continue for years to come. LOUIS is the quintessential library information system which every academic institution across the state should not be without. Investment in its maintenance and expansion now can only reap greater benefits in thefuture.
Dr. Henry O. Robertson, Associate Professor of History, LouisianaCollege
As a faculty member I am increasingly concerned about keeping the costs of books reasonable for students struggling with very real problems like food, housing, and transportation insecurity. While two of the books I assign in my Race, Class, and Schools course, Shamus Kahn's Privilege and Angel Harris' Kids Don't Want to Fail, are relatively inexpensive when compared to textbooks in the sciences, the modest cost (~$40 total) is a real barrier to some students. I am deeply grateful that the library leadership at my institution has been proactive about expanding students access to e-texts. I know many of my students have made use of these resources. I am particularly grateful that it helps reduce the stigma that still surrounds having to admit to your professor that you cannot afford the books. It also allows me to continue to use what I think are gold-standard materials instead of adopting materials that are lower quality but cheaper. -Professor, on Affordable Learning LOUISiana Last year, I took an amazing social justice seminar. There were five textbooks for that class, and I don't think one of them was less than $20 on the Kindle Store. That adds up to over $100 for textbooks just for one class. I jumped for joy when I found that the library had purchased four of these books, and we could access them online. I was even more delighted to find that they were completely accessible to me as a totally blind student. They worked like a dream with my screen reader. Having access to books without having to rob a bank is crucial for a successful learning experience. I believe that authors should be compensated for their work, but I know most college students don't have $500 a semester to spend on books. This is why it's important to make books available online for students. -Undergraduate Student, on Affordable Learning LOUISianaPrevious Next
