FILMING YOUR MOVIE
If you’re cutting between closeups of two actors talking to each other, film the whole scene with the camera on actor 1, then move the camera round to face actor 2 and film the whole scene again. You can then cut between these two shots, and the cutaways and master shots, when you edit. You can use exactly the same technique for interviews. If possible, use a separate microphone , adjust the sound level, and use headphones while you’re recording. EXPOSURE EXPLAINED
Exposure explained. For your film to look good, you need to make sure that it’s not too bright (overexposed) or too dark (underexposed). The easy, lazy way to do this is to let the camera work it out. But to shoot really good video you need to set it yourself. If you make one of these bigger, you can make one of the others smaller. HOW TO READ A MOVIE SCENE You can learn a lot about filmmaking by analysing a single scene from a movie; Start by freeze-framing and looking at each shot in detail; Then look at the editing, sound, and how the scene shows time HOW TO CHOOSE A CAMERA FOR LOW BUDGET FILMMAKING Creative filmmaking. You can choose between four main types of camera for serious low-budget filmmaking: mirrorless/DSLR, prosumer camcorders, pro camcorders and cinema cameras. Each type has its pros and cons: there’s more about the differences between them here. Click on the headings for more details, and recommended cameras, ineach category.
THE 180 DEGREE RULE AND EYELINE MATCH The 180 degree rule works for interviews as well, cutting between interviewer and interviewee. But you can get problems with eyeline if you’re filming up close and wide angle: the interviewee may seem to be looking well off to one side, which seems evasive. You can reduce this effect by keeping both camera positions really close to the axisLEARN ABOUT FILM

FILMMAKING BASICS: THE SEQUENCE Filmmaking Basics: The Sequence. Films are made up of sequences of shots. So if a single shot is a bit like a sentence in a story, a sequence is like a paragraph. EQUIPMENT FOR LOW BUDGET FILMMAKING Choosing a camera. Your choice of camera will depend on how much you can afford, and what kind of movies you want to make. For most people, a mirrorless camera or DSLR, where you can change lenses, is the best choice. The Panasonic G85/G80 is a good camera to start with. But if you’re shooting events, news or documentaries, camcorders are moreconvenient.
FILMMAKING: CAMERA POSITION AND ANGLE Filmmaking: Camera Position and Angle. Don’t just vary your shot size: use different camera angles and positions as well. Instead of shooting everything from eye level, with the camera horizontal, try shooting with it pointing up or down. Crouch down below the subject, hold the camera above your head, climb stairs or use a tall tripod orladder.
BEST LENSES FOR FILMMAKING WITH PANASONIC CAMERAS The GH4 has the biggest crop when shooting 4K: it’s 2.6, or 2.5 in ‘Cinema’ UHD. So a 12mm lens would be equivalent to a not-that-wide 31mm. With the newer G7 and G85/G80, the crop factor is 2.4. The GH5 uses the whole sensor. So its crop factor is 2.2, the same as when recording HD.LEARN ABOUT FILM
