Myford offered both a number of independent milling machines and milling attachments for their lathes - though non of either variety were constructed by the Company itself but bought in from various suppliers - both British and foreign. STANDARD MODERNLLATHES The spindle, which was well supported by a pair of preloaded, Timken tapered roller bearings at the nose, and a single bearing at the rear, was bored 1.375" and fitted with a D1-4" Camlock nose; although the hole at the front was finished as No. 5 Morse taper, this was normally fitted with a hardened sleeve to take it down to a No. 3 Morse forregular use.

In this form (apart from power cross feed 10-F introduced a year later) the lathe had reached almost its final evolutionary form and was to continue largely unchanged until 1957 - and the introduction of the heavily revised "12-inch" model. SIXIS MILLING MACHINES SIXIS 101 Made by Perrenoud et Fils S.A.-2520 LaNeuveville in Switzerland the Sixis range of high-precision universal milling machines was based on three models: the 101, 102 and 103 - as well as some hydraulic-drive examples of the 102 and 103 and variants with customised controls for individual customers. Myford ML7 3.5" x 20" gap bed, backgeared and screwcutting as it appeared in the late 1940s and early 1950s. ML7 - General Specification (full dimensions sheet at the bottom of this page): Of ribbed box-section, the bed was constructed with a flat top of typically English style, with narrow vertical shears, the nearer one in the gap between the front and back ways being shared by the saddle ATLAS & CRAFTSMAN MILLING MACHINE Also sold using the "Craftsman" brand name by Sears, the Atlas Horizontal Miller was a heavily built but compact machine - and one that demonstrated the typical attention to detail and care in design that marked the products of the American Atlas Press Company. As the only miller in the Atlas range, it's surprising that the maker failed to list a complimentary vertical machine and, even more AMOLCO MILLING ATTACHMENT When used as an accessory, unlike the Rodney and Staines vertical milling attachments that were driven from the lathe's headstock, the Amolco had a bench-drill-like V-belt motor drive that gave speeds of 325, 650, 1100 and 1600 rpm. When it was unveiled in August, 1946 (at £34, without a motor) the Myford ML7 lathe was greeted with astonishment. Designed by Ted Barrs during the closing years of WW2 (1939-1945), here was a well-designed, compact lathe with a neatly built-on motor-countershaft unit, fully guarded belts and changewheels - and with a specification guaranteed SOUTH BEND 9-INCH LATHE South Bend 9-inch Workshop Lathe Stands and Drive Systems. During its first two years of production the "Workshop" lathe was available as either a bench unit - with a separate but self-contained countershaft drive - or fitted to cast iron legs, in which case the drive system had to be remotely mounted on the wall or ceiling. After nineteen years of steady development, from the first version in 1902, the 3.5" x 16" Drummond flat-bed lathe reached almost its final form in late 1921 - but with important changes to the headstock bearings and spindle in 1924 - from which date on it was known as the M-Type - a model that was to continue almost unchanged until manufacture was taken over by Myford in 1941. STANDARD MODERN UTILATHES Ideal machines for the more ambitious home-machinist, the 9 and 10-inch Standard Modern "Utilathe" models were distinctly different. While most manufacturers would have been content to add one half-inch to the centre height and proclaim a new model, Standard Modern ensured that the larger of their two utility models was very much more heavily built than the smaller. DENBIGH MILLING MACHINES Denbigh "C" Type fitted with the optional 2-inch stroke Slotting Head. Of all their various models, the Type C is the Denbigh that appears to have to survived in the greatest numbers - although the "D" type was also popular and designed to compete at the less-expensive end of the market, as its strictly functional appearance would confirm. Named after its swing of 140 mm (11 inches) the Harrison 140 was produced late in the life of the L5A/11-inch series. The lathe was mechanically identical to the earlier machines except for a squared-off headstock which may have contained slightly altered gear ratios. Replacing the long-lived and well-known Myford ML8, the Mystro was Myford's last venture into the wood-lathe market and sold in two versions, the Mk.1 and Mk.2. With drive by V-belts over multi-step pulleys, the UK-built 5-speed Mk. 1 is usually, but not always, found finished in red and black while the Taiwanese-constructed, variable-speed Mk. 2 is more usually in aquamarine. ATLAS & CRAFTSMAN MILLING MACHINE Also sold using the "Craftsman" brand name by Sears, the Atlas Horizontal Miller was a heavily built but compact machine - and one that demonstrated the typical attention to detail and care in design that marked the products of the American Atlas Press Company. As the only miller in the Atlas range, it's surprising that the maker failed to list a complimentary vertical machine and, even more MASHSTROY (WARCO) C210T, C220, 220 LATHES Mashstroy (Warco) C210T, 220 & 220VS Lathes. Made in Bulgaria by machine-tool builders Mashstroy and imported into the UK by Warco (better known for their Taiwanese machine tools) the 4" x 19" Mashstroy Series 210 and 220 lathes had an interesting combination of features. Produced for over 20 years they boasted a box-section induction-hardened bed of great depth with a wide, flat top with AMOLCO MILLING ATTACHMENT When used as an accessory, unlike the Rodney and Staines vertical milling attachments that were driven from the lathe's headstock, the Amolco had a bench-drill-like V-belt motor drive that gave speeds of 325, 650, 1100 and 1600 rpm.
