CANADA'S SPOTTED LAKE 0. by Daniel Kelly. — March 8, 2016. When it’s filled with water, Spotted Lake in Canada’s province of British Columbia isn’t much to see. LAKES & CLIMATE CHANGE Lakes play a much greater role in global carbon cycling than their area would otherwise predict. While lakes make up less than 2% of Earth’s surface area, they bury over three times more carbon in their sediments than all of the world’s oceans combined 2. This means on a per area basis lakes bury over 100 times more carbon thanthe oceans.
SAY WHAT: FIVE LAKES WITH FUNNY NAMES Strawberry Reservoir. This water body is the state of Utah’s most popular fishery. Game fish in its water include rainbow trout, bear lake cutthroat trout, kokanee salmon and crayfish. It was formed after a dam was built to divert water from the Strawberry Valley into Utah Valley. It gets its name from the Strawberry Valley where it resides.EUTROPHICATION
The process of eutrophication is natural 2. For many lakes, as they age over centuries, there is a buildup of nutrients, sediment, and plant material, which slowly fill the lake basin. Eventually, the process ends and the basin becomes colonized by terrestrial vegetation 3. The timing of natural eutrophication is highly variable and dependson
WATER QUALITY
Water quality is a general term that refers to a general description about the properties of a water body. Lakes that have a high water quality possess properties that make it a high valued resource to society and nature. Commonly, water quality is assessed through the use of many different parameters and methods ranging from simple testkits
PYRAMID LAKE IS NEVADA'S LARGEST NATURAL WATER BODY But Pyramid Lake is the largest natural lake in Nevada and holds plenty of discoveries of its own. In the mid-80s, it was important in forming a stream simulation and assessment model for the Truckee River to track pollutant loading in the tributary.. Those loads directly affect the Lahontan cutthroat trout and the Cui-ui sucker fish, bothendangered species.

The C6’s fast sampling rate and incorporation of depth, pressure, and temperature measurements allow for accurate data collection in an aquatic environment. LAKES & CLIMATE CHANGE EURASIAN WATERMILFOIL The detrimental effects that Eurasian watermilfoil has often come from the way it grows into dense beds. The thick sections can reduce the amount of light penetrating through lakes or ponds, which shades out native plants. They also provide more hiding spaces for smaller fish, possibly diminishing food supplies available to larger fish and DRAGON'S BREATH CAVE HOLDS THE WORLD'S The discovery was made in 1986 and the cave – because of the humid air that rises from it – has come to be known as Dragon’s Breath Cave. In its belly lies the largest underground non-subglacial lake in the world. So large, in fact, that divers have only been able to chart its depths to 430 feet. The lake has very clear water. BUCKEYE LAKE'S FLOATING CRANBERRY ISLAND 1. by Daniel Kelly. — May 27, 2014. Ohio’s Buckeye Lake is one of the oldest reservoirs in America. Its shores touch three counties in Ohio. But most interesting is what floats within its coasts: a cranberry bog. The floating island is the only known to exist in the U.S. and supports rare flora, including round-leafed sundew andpitcher
PITCH LAKE IS A NATURAL ASPHALT LAKE Pitch Lake’s total asphalt reserves are estimated at 6 million tons, but are steadily replenished from oil below. Pitch Lake is also called “La Brea Pitch Lake” – brea means tar in Spanish, which is the namesake of California’s tar pits. Similar to the La Brea Tar Pits, Pitch Lake has also been a source of ancient fossilized remains. MYSTERY OF CROWLEY LAKE COLUMNS SOLVED 0. by Daniel Kelly. — November 19, 2015. After California’s Crowley Lake reservoir was completed in 1941, strange column-like formations were spotted on the water body’s eastern shore. The rising gray and stony cylinders have cracks ringing around them at intervals of about 1 foot and have inspired comparisons to Moorishtemples.
WHERE ARE LAKES?
Lakes and other freshwaters range in size from 0.001 km 2 for the smallest lakes and ponds, and the largest, the Caspian Sea, at 378,119 km 1, 2. Although a few extremely large lakes may dominate area, small lakes dominate the total number of lakes around the world. Lakes of all sizes are an important area of biological study, because while POLLUTION - LAKE SCIENTIST Pollution. Pollution affects water quality in lakes and other freshwater resources around the globe. It can take many forms from industrial, agricultural, or municipal sources; a few common examples include pesticides, herbicides, sewage, and litter. Lakes often contain high pollution levels relative to the surrounding landscapesand environment.
FIVE CLEAREST LAKES AROUND THE WORLD Located in the top half of New Zealand’s South Island, Blue Lake is said to be the clearest lake in the world. Its waters are fed by another lake that sits above its height of 1,200 meters above sea level. Its underwater visibility is believed to extend to 76 meters (249.3 feet), which is comparable to the clearness of distilled water.Blue Lake.
CANADA'S SPOTTED LAKE 0. by Daniel Kelly. — March 8, 2016. When it’s filled with water, Spotted Lake in Canada’s province of British Columbia isn’t much to see. The saline lake looks a lot like others of its kind. Sure, it’s pretty in its own way, as all lakes are. But the real beauty of the spotted lake, oddly, comes after most of its water evaporates.EUTROPHICATION
ACID RAIN - LAKE SCIENTIST Acid Rain. Acid rain and acid precipitation are broad terms referring to deposited material from the atmosphere that contains higher than normal amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids. These deposits come from a mixture of wet sources, such as rain, fog, and snow, and dry ones, including dust and smoke. Most acid rain forms from man-made sources KELIMUTU CRATER LAKES The Kelimutu crater lakes are a mystery all their own. Sitting at the top of the Kelimutu volcano in Indonesia, each of the three water bodies is a different color. And no one really knows why that’s the case. Stranger still is the fact that some of the lakes have changed color throughout history. One, known in the local language as the bewitched lake, Ata Polo, was once white. ASIAN CARP CONTROL METHODS In late October 2015, two small silver Asian carp were found in the Marseilles Pool of the Illinois River, according to a release from the Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee (ACRCC). The find means that the invasive species has moved about 12 miles closer since the last determination, putting them within more than 76 miles of LakeMichigan.
