TRANSIT EQUITY 2021
For the past four years on February 4, a network of transit rider unions, community organizations, environmental groups and labor unions have organized Transit Equity Day–a national day of action to commemorate the birthday of Rosa Parks by declaring that public transit is a civil right.Rosa is an iconic figure of the civil rights era who chose the tactic of refusing to give up her seat on TRANSFORM, HEAL, AND RENEW BY INVESTING IN A VIBRANT The crises we’re facing are interlocking, so the solutions have to be as well. At a time of national reckoning with centuries of racist policy, a global pandemic, and an ongoing climate crisis, we need a bold and forward-looking agenda. That's why the Labor Network for Sustainability has signed onto the THRIVE Agenda, an economic renewal plan that lays out eight pillars to put millions of JUST TRANSITION: YOU’VE HEARD THE TERM, NOW HEAR THE STORY Todd E. Vachon is a union carpenter, a sociologist, and the Faculty Coordinator of the Labor Education Action Research Network (LEARN) at Rutgers University. He earned his PhD from the University of Connecticut where he helped to form the graduate employee union-UAW Local 6950 and served as the first local president from 2015-2018. WORKERS' CLIMATE SURVEY A Convergence workshop led by John Harrity, retired President of the Connecticut International Association of Machinists and chair of the Connecticut Roundtable on Climate and Jobs (pictured above), consumer-tested a survey that unions and other labor organizations can use to find out the impact of climate change on our members’ jobs and communities—and to stimulate NUCLEAR POWER? 8 QUESTIONS NEED TO BE ANSWERED Rising greenhouse gases. Climate change. Rising energy costs. Declining fossil fuels reserves. Now the BP disaster. With the arguments against fossil fuels continuing to pile up it’s no wonder people have latched onto nuclear power as an attractive solution. The first Earth Day in 1970 had very significant support from the United Automobile Workers and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which included money, staff time, printing, and other related resources. Denis Hayes, organizer of the first Earth Day told Labor Network for Sustainability President Joe Uehlein that the first Earth Day would not have happened without labor support. Some of the larger Earth Day planning retreats/meetings were held at the UAW’s Black Lake training center in upstate Michigan. TAKE ACTION NOW!
