IT’S KORRA AND KUVIRA VS MAKO, BOLIN, AND ASAMI IN _THE LEGEND OF KORRA: __RUINS OF THE EMPIRE_ PART 3!
We now have the cover and description and they come with a major bombshell: Part Two is still months out and Part Three even further after that, but MAKO, BOLIN, AND ASAMI BECOME BRAINWASHED AND TURNED AGAINST KORRA, along with others across the Earth Kingdom, . This could be the result of the scientific experiments using spiritenergy
the Earth Empire remnant was conducting. This is actually kind of exciting because we’ve never seen Team Avatar battle each other before and that’s now a possibility. Of course, Korra should realistically have a much higher base power level, but who knows what the spirit energy experiments have up theirsleeve…
Here’s the full description: _“Kuvira’s true nature is revealed, and the Earth Kingdom will feel the consequences!_ _Thanks to Commander Guan and Doctor Sheng’s brainwashing technology, all hope for a fair election in the Earth Kingdom is lost. Korra works with Toph, Su, and Kuvira to plan a means to rescue not just the brainwashed Mako, Bolin, and Asami, but everyone else caught up in Guan’s plan! With the Earth Empire potentially on the rise again, Kuvira pulls another trick from her sleeve … but whose side is she truly on?”_ You can see the cover and description for Part Two here.
It comes out November 12th. Part Three arrives on FEBRUARY 25TH, 2020.source

BOOK TWO OF THE AVATAR KYOSHI SERIESWILL BE TITLED _THE
SHADOW OF KYOSHI_
Kind of confusing naming… So at first when the series was announced as being two books, it wasn’t clear whether _The Rise of Kyoshi_was the name
of the first book or the series. Now we know that Book One is titled _The Rise of Kyoshi_ and Book Two is titled _The Shadow of Kyoshi_! So the series doesn’t really have a name, if it is still only two bookslong .
For Book Two, there’s no release date yet, but we can estimate it’ll be about a year from now in Summer 2020. Meanwhile Book One, _The Rise of Kyoshi_, comes out in a couple weeks on July 16th! The author, F. C. Yee, recently sharedwhat
the physical book looks like without the slip cover:
Very slick…….
He’s also been doing a countdown to the release with a bunch of coolfun facts:
* “Working with Mike DiMartino on RISE OF KYOSHI was not only a deep-dive into the lore of the Avatar-verse, but also a masterclass in storytelling. I’ve come out of this a better writer than I was going in from his notes and feedback.” * “Secret bonus of working with Mike - I got to ask him questions about power levels between Avatar Kyoshi, Toph, and Bumi like thetotal nerd I am”
* “It is now official canon that in her youth Kyoshi once picked up a grown man by the neck with one hand and made him cry” * “While outlining I proposed an earthbending sub-discipline that made everyone working on this project give me side-eye over the phone on a conference call (it is not in the book)” * “Since this was a prequel, I had to be mindful of setting worldbuilding precedents. For example, I may have inadvertently pre-explained how Zuko has his Book One hairstyle 👀” * “Just like Toph’s unique personal bending style draws on Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu as an inspiration, someone in this book has Choy Li Fut Kung Fu as the base of their own unique bendingstyle.”
* “It was not my intent, but once #riseofkyoshi comes out, all of my published novels will have a scene that takes place in a dumpling restaurant. What happens in the restaurant is wildly differentthough”
LAST BUT DEFINITELY NOT LEAST, YOU CAN ALSO READ A REALLY REALLY COOL EXCERPT OF BOOK ONE, CHAPTER SEVEN: _THE ICEBERG_ HERE.

Team Avatar and Tenzin get together for a portrait! This super cute poster will be available from Insight Editions at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con from July 18th to 21st, at booth #3721. (Insight Editions is the publishing house that’s bringing us _An Avatar’s Chronicle_ and _Legacy of

That’s pretty much it for this year’s Avatar presence at SDCC. You can expect the franchise to return to the glory days of big panels next year for the new live-action ATLAseries!!

ONE OF ATLA’S ORIGINAL DIRECTORS HAS SEEN “EARLY PRELIMINARY STUFF” FROM THE UPCOMING NETFLIX LIVE-ACTION ATLASERIES AND
IT “MIGHT HAVE MADE CRY”— “DEFINITELY GOOD CRY”. Giancarlo Volpe was one of the directors on the original animated ATLA . He’s not involved in the new series at all but it looks like he was given an insider sneak peak and that things are looking good!! Not sure what exactly the “verrrry early preliminary stuff” could be at this point. We know that there’s going to be an open castingcall
later this year, so it can’t be anything to do with the actors yet. It’s possible he saw conceptart
,
aka “previs”: an extensive part of pre-production where artists basically craft the whole look of the world and characters. Seeing the new show’s visions for the characters and locations could certainly bring one to tears… He could have been transported to the world of Avatar itself through VR. We know that as early as February they had VR environments ready, most likely the Southern Water Tribe. In the months since then it’s possible other impressive settings like a Fire Nation ship, Omashu, and the Northern Water Tribe have been done as well, and stepping into them would surely be moving. It could also be early tests for BENDING! This is something that would need to be developed ahead of time so that when the actors are cast and start filming they have a system in place. In ATLA and TLOK, bending was beautifully tied to the different martial arts forms and grounded in the human body, so seeing this brought to life successfully would also definitely be tear-worthy. Just a bit of speculation, but tying the last two ideas together: it’s possible they’ve developed technology where actors can actually bend in real time in VR. It would definitely be complicated and expensive but stuff like that is getting more common in complicated and expensive productions so… who knows. 😉 Whatever it is, it’s another vote of confidence that the new series is gonna be good!1,062 notes

THE CHARACTERS OF _AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER_ WILL NOT BE AGED UP FOR THE NEW LIVE-ACTION SERIESMuch. Probably.
Bryke recently met up for lunch with Michaela Murphy (previously known as Jessie Flower), the original voice actor of Toph and Meng in ATLA, and young Suyin in TLOK. (Fun fact: both she and Dante Basco played descendants of their ATLA characters: Lin and her daughter Suyin, and Zuko and his grandson Iroh II, respectively). In discussing how Michaela was a little kid wayyy back when they first met (ATLA is over 14 years old now 😵), Bryan casually dropped a major bomb of vital information about the new live-action ATLA series coming toNetflix.
Specifically, he said: “SHE HAD SOME GREAT INSIGHTS ON BEING A CHILD ACTOR THAT WILL SURELY BENEFIT OUR FUTURE CAST.” THE NEW SERIES WILL HAVE CHILD ACTORS, aka the characters will remain their young ages like originally! This is HUGE. The new series is shrouded in secrecy, and one of the biggest questions we have is whether the characters will be aged up like, for example, in _Game of Thrones_. This seems to answer thatquestion with a no.
Ok so it’s a pretty broad assumption. You could still have Aang (12 originally) played by a 17-year-old child actor who is like 25 by the time the show is done. For the record, the main characters’ ages at the start of the animated series are: * Aang: (one hundred and) 12* Katara: 14
* Sokka: 15
* Zuko: 16
And introduced in Book Two:* Toph: 12
* Azula: 14
Yeah… Azula is _fourteen_… So they probably will still age them up a bit just considering the crazy storylines these characters go through (or just get slightly older actors while keeping the characters’ ages the same). At the same time, we know know they’re _not_ going the route of casting actors in like their 20s and then their 30s by the end of the series, still playing teens. Based on Bryan’s comment about “child actors”, the characters will probably be played by actors in their teens (since only Aang and Toph are technically not teenagers yet at the start), and then based on how demanding the roles are, they’ll probably be at least a bit older than their ages in the animated series, to keep it realistic in ways that animation doesn’t have to be. Aging the characters up maybe two-ish years, or getting actors about that much older, is probably a safe bet. Some of the actors might be the same age as their characters while others might be older, so you could have a 14-year-old character played by a 16-year-old actor, and a 16-year-old-character played by a 16-year-old actor. It doesn’t necessarily have to match up. The reason I present this speculation with some confidence is that from yesterday’s major update, we know they’re moving ontothe “next phase
”
of production. They probably have a main decision like the characters’ approximate age bracket made by now, since they’re moving onto casting “before too long”. Ultimately it comes down to whichever young actor is best for each role. It’ll be really exciting to find out who is found through theOPEN CASTING
process, especially considering they’re committed to “CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE, NON-WHITEWASHED” CASTING!
One more thing…
This actually reveals a SECOND big fact about the new show. The live-action series will likely have a DIFFERENT TIMELINE than the animated original, which took place over the course of about 9 months (winter, spring, and summer of one year corresponding directly to Book One: _Water_, Book Two: _Earth_, and Book Three: _Fire_). With young actors growing up like crazy over the years of filming, that timeline isn’t really possible. It’s more realistic to say that each season is equal to a year in-universe since it’ll take about a year (or more) to make each season. So rather than finding out that Sozin’s Comet is arriving at the end of the summer, Aang will probably find out that it’s coming in several years. Especially if the series is6+ seasons long
.
Either way we should find out for sure very soon!!810 notes
