Kentucky Coalition is a social justice organization supporting leadership development, grassroots organizing and public policy advocacy in Kentucky, across the South, and in Appalachia. Established in 1984, Kentucky Coalition is the fiscal agent for Kentuckians For The Commonwealth. The Kentucky Coalition provides financial support for the charitable and educational activities of KFTC, a RESTORE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE Restore your right to vote. We won a major victory late last year when Governor Andy Beshear signed an executive order restoring the right to vote to an estimated 140,000 people with felonies in their past. Our allies at the Campaign Legal Center put together a great tool at www.Restoreyourvote.org to help people figure out whether Andy Beshear INDIGENOUS LANDS ACKNOWLEDGMENT In the United States in 2016, 5,712 murdered and missing indigenous women were reported, but only 116 were logged in the Department of Justice missing persons database. Homicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among native girls and women ages 10-24. It is the 5th leading cause of death among native women ages 25-34. KENTUCKY'S TAX STRUCTURE IS NOT FAIR Low- and middle-income Kentuckians pay about 9-10% of their income to state and local taxes, while the state’s wealthiest 1% pay about 6% of their income to state and local taxes. OUR HISTORY
In the late 1970s, citizens in six Appalachian states conducted a land study, researching the ownership of land and minerals in selected counties, and who paid the taxes. We are citizen researchers, residents, and KENTUCKIANS FOR THE COMMONWEALTH Last summer and fall, KFTC members and our allies fought back hard when Kentucky Power – a monopoly utility serving more than 100,000 households in eastern Kentucky – proposed to sharply raise rates in the middle of a pandemic and to restructure its rates in complex ways that were deeply harmful to ratepayers and the future of clean and efficient energy in Kentucky. Fifth Street – Lexington COAL ASH | KENTUCKIANS FOR THE COMMONWEALTH Coal ash is a residue left over from the burning of coal. The smokestacks and furnaces of coal combustion plants are required to have filters that keep coal ash from spewing directly into the air; however, this leaves a leftover deposit (also known as coal combustion waste) that contains concentrated amounts of toxic heavy metals. This residue is then either stored in landfills (dry storage NEW ENERGY AND TRANSITION NEWS Kentucky had more than 9,000 "clean energy jobs" in 2007, a new report by the Pew Charitable Trust found.
