FRIAR’S CORNER: THE JOY OF SUCCESSFUL DISCIPLESHIP All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age, Matthew 28:18-20. THE UNPREDICTABLE HOLY SPIRIT The unpredictable Holy Spirit. Whether we have a prepared witness or an unexpected opportunity, the Holy Spirit readies the listeners he chooses and works to evangelize them through his elaborate plan. That plan usually is unknown to us. The spontaneity often is what makes our story real and touches someone to the core. FRIAR’S CORNER: FATHERHOOD A GREAT GIFT AMONG MANY 2) understanding to know God’s plans for us, 3) counsel to make right judgments, 4) fortitude to resist and overcome evil things. 5) knowledge to know and grow in God’s ways, 6) piety to have reverence or respect for God. 7) fear or respect for God and losing His love. These gifts provide necessary aids for living our individual lives. FRIAR’S CORNER: JESUS GIVES US HIS LOVE-POWER The end of chapter 13 of St. John introduces us to the last teachings of Jesus to his faithful followers at the Last Supper after Judas had left. We will read those from chapters 14-17. FRIAR’S CORNER: SPREADING THE LIGHT OF CHRIST Posted on September 21, 2019by
Nancy Ward
Fr. Bob Hilz, TOR
AMOS 8:4-7; PSALM 113:1-2 AND 4-8; 1 TIMOTHY 2:1-8; LUKE 16:1-13 Two of this Sunday’s readings speak about good and honest business relationships. Psalm 113 speaks about praising God who raises up thepoor.
With the difficulties in the world today, I like St. Paul’s first letter to Timothy. It has good instructions in his time, which I believe are even more important for us today. He asked his listeners to pray for several things. First, we need to thank the Holy Trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, for all of their provisions and blessings in our lives. We have many good things to be grateful for in our democratic nation. What other country has so many blessings for most of their citizens? We have our problems, yet we are so blessed. St. Paul then encourages us to beg and petition God for the outpouring of his merciful graces on everyone yet most especially for those in national leadership, congress, and other major agencies. Then, since we are not a dictatorship, but a collection of fifty states, to pray for all government leadership and agencies who have the responsibility of guiding and providing for just and peaceful care for all of our citizens. We want to do this so that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotions and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who will everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledgeof (God’s) truth.
> For there is (only) one God. > There is also one mediator between God and men, > the man Christ Jesus, > who gave himself as ransom for all. (1 Timothy 2:2b-6) We all know there is so much confusion and some attacks from evil forces that we cannot do anything about. We can get worried and frightened about some things, which does not bring us to a peaceful and tranquil life. What we can do is spend more time thanking God and begging him to pour out more of his power, love and guidance for all of us and those who have the responsibility to protect us. This will certainly help us live and a more successful life in our local areaand country.
I think we can all agree that much prayer is needed for our major national leadership in dealing with our national difficulties, our allies and those other nations who do not have good and peaceful desires for our nation and our world. May Jesus continue to bless you, your family, ministry, parish, area, state and country.* Father Bob Hilz

SHARING YOUR FAITH STORY: THE MOVIE! Posted on September 16, 2019by Nancy

his testimony, “No Turning Back” he tells how the Lord captured his heart in high school. The mindset, “no turning back,” kept him making the hard choices that allowed God to work in his life. Kevin has a heart for evangelization and produced a YouTube video, Sharing Your Faith Story, to demonstrate his ideas on how to share your faith story. He writes about his story, conversion and evangelization on his blog, Parish Dynamics, Spiritual Vitality Through Conversion. “After 25 years as a volunteer leader in parish ministry, I began to seek to better understand the obstacles blocking spiritual growth, both personally and as a parish,” he said. While recognizing the need for evangelization, genuine Christian community, and discipleship, I came to appreciate how all of these hinge on a more fundamental dynamic_: conversion to Christ._ _“Parish Dynamics_ starts with the premise that spiritual vitality comes through ongoing conversion. This conversion depends not on how much we know or do, but to the degree by which we allow the Holy Spirit to change or ‘form’ us. ‘Dynamics’ are simply movements of the Spirit that bring about conversion, and our best response is neither one of control nor passivity, but of cooperation. “As I continue to recognize the profound implications of a spirituality based on conversion, I hope to share my discoveries with others and to inspire others to do the same.” ABOUT KEVIN — _IN HIS OWN WORDS_ “Raised as a Catholic and attending Catholic schools, the Lord captured my heart during my senior year in high school. After starting out as an electrical engineer, I changed careers and have spent the subsequent years in medical practice as a family physician. Since my conversion experience, I have served as a leader in a variety of parish ministries, including college campus ministry, marriage enrichment, music ministry, men’s groups, high school youth ministry, discipleship training, mentoring, and adult faith formation. I am an ecclesial lay minister, and I currently lead a men’s group and teach workshops for the Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana.”— _Kevin Luksus_

With all the confusion these days and the varying theme from the Sunday readings, I am looking for a simple and direct theme. What do I see from the parables that Jesus gives us today? I sense Jesus is our Shepherd. Most of us miss the point since we are not sheepherders and don’t make our living selling them or their wool. So, what is thepoint here?
When we look at other scriptures about sheep and Jesus it is very interesting. In Jesus’ time, shepherds around Jerusalem were raising them to be used in the temple. They needed quite a lot of them. So, each one was worth money to the shepherd. If one got lost it would be necessary to find the lost one. Continue reading →SHARE THIS:

THE SIX LESSONS OF 9-11 Posted on September 11, 2019by Nancy Ward
_The Pentagon burning across the Potomac on 9-11-01 (photo by NancyWard)_
Do you, like the majority of people in the United States remember vividly where you were and how you reacted to the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. Look back with me as I recall six lessons Ilearned on 9-11.
_THE LESSON OF THANKFULNESS_ After 18 years, I still keep a poster on the wall of my office advertising the National Book Festival, which my husband and I attended on September 8, 2001. All kinds of booths and entertainment venues filled the National Mall in Washington, DC. The neighboring public buildings hosted educational and informational presentations. Authors signed their books in the halls of the Library of Congress. It was a beautiful day—the last one I remember before our lives changed forever three days later. The LESSON OF _THANKFULNESS_ for beautiful days of innocence. We moved to DC between Christmas 2000 and New Year’s 2001 for a temporary adventure—for a year or so. My husband was a science and technology fellow, advising a senator and we lived in a high-rise apartment on the DC side of the Potomac River. Like you, we will never forget where we were on September 11, 2001 — forever after known as 9-11. That morning, as soon as the news came on our TV, Phil hurriedly left for the Russell Senate Office Building at the Capitol, a short subway ride away. Continue reading →SHARE THIS:
