Many of the programs and events at JMKAC would not be possible without the help of Friends of Art, the Arts Center’s dedicated volunteer organization. There are more than 500 active volunteers who generously contribute over 5,000 hours every year tothe Arts Center.

Return to the Real responds to this question through a series of exhibitions, performances, and events that foreground the multisensory experience of viewing art in person. The series title is derived from art critic and historian Hal Foster’s influential 1996 book Return of the Real, a theoretical exploration of contemporary art grounded inTHE BUILDING
Arts/Industry is a unique collaboration, administered by the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and generously hosted and funded by Kohler Co. The artists chosen for the washroom commissions were given access to the materials and support team of the Kohler Co. factory to execute their designs. In keeping with the theme of the Art Preserve’s ANTHONY OLUBUNMI AKINBOLA: MAGIC CITY A large-scale installation conceived as a modern-day sanctuary, Anthony Olubunmi Akinbola’s Magic City explores the commodification of Black culture and the relationship between Africa and Black America through the lenses of fetishism and globalism.. Many sites are dismantled, usually occasioned by an artist’s death. The disparate elements are then scattered, often among multiple private collections or institutions. The Arts Center collection, with so many complete or ARTIST-BUILT ENVIRONMENTS Responses Throughout the Art Preserve, visitors will encounter new work commissioned from makers, creatives, scholars, and conservators in response to the art environments in the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s collection. These works offer new ways of connecting with the collection and expand the conversation about art environments.
