James Carse was the Director of Religious Studies at New York University for thirty years. He was a member of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies, and the recipient of numerous teaching awards. The “beloved disciple” is an unnamed companion of Jesus, known to us only through a single verse in the Gospel of John. I imagine this person to be a woman, intimately associated with the young, itinerant and homeless rabbi. BREAKFAST AT THE VICTORY Breakfast at the Victory. The Victory Luncheonette could be found in Manhattan’s East Village in a cramped, overlooked space, surrounded by small industrial buildings. The owner and sole employ of the establishment was a gentleman known to his regulars simply as Ernie. The name of the luncheonette identified Ernie as a veteran of the Last PHDEATH: THE PUZZLER MURDERS PhDeath: the Puzzler Murders. About eight in the morning, two days before the beginning of the semester, the body of the Dean of Arts and Sciences was found crushed on the sidewalk, ten stories below his office in the administration building. It was assumed at first to be asuicide.
