We invite you to submit proposals. This year’s submission deadline is FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2020. For members of the Società Italiana di Ricerca Didattica (SIRD) only, the submission deadline has been extended to Friday, February 21, 2020. All presenters will be notified of our decision by March 6th. Submit Your Proposal 45TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE: JULY 1-3, 2020 LOCAL HOST: UNIVERSITY OF PADUA THE 2020 CONFERENCE THEME: TOWARD SUSTAINABLE ASSESSMENT Today we are experiencing widespread dissatisfaction with traditional assessment. Why? Too often such assessment seems divorced from learning, rather than serving to promote it. And too often it seems imposed on students rather than including them as active participants. In fact, the failure to involve students in their own assessment experiences not only limits their participation in assessment while at university, but also prevents them from developing a skill they will need even more after graduation. These concerns about too narrow and rigid a definition of assessment have inspired a movement toward so-called sustainable assessment that we intend to explore at our upcoming conference. We use “sustainable” here in two ways. First, sustainable assessment implies practices with a long-term impact—helping students both to identify how well they have met required standards and to evaluate peer performance objectively and fairly. Second, sustainable assessment should engage faculty in creating a culture within their academic programs that enjoys their support and provides sensible strategies for continuous improvement. How can we encourage both academic staff and students to make assessment more useful and more engaging? How can we create conditions that will allow students to evaluate their efforts honestly, without either being excessively critical or pretending to knowledge they do not (yet) possess? What can academic programs do to promote a genuine assessment culture in which these activities add vitality to the learning environment rather than becoming just one more obligation that faculty must meet? Over three days in Padua, our 45th consecutive international conference will address these and related questions concerning the promise and problems inherent in sustainable assessment. The sessions will be held in collaboration with the Società Italiana di Ricerca Didattica (SIRD), whose members benefit from a special discount. Our local host will be the University of Padua—the second oldest university in Italy and the venue for many academic gatherings, soon to celebrate its 800th anniversary. It seems a promising setting for exploring this year’s conference theme. We hope you will join usthere.
SIX SUB-THEMES UNDERLIE THE OVERALL CONFERENCE TOPIC: * Feedback as a learning tool * Building dynamic programs through assessment * Technology-enhanced assessment * Embedding assessment in course design * Promoting student assessment of self, peers, and faculty * Recent research in assessment Held in collaboration with the Società Italiana de Ricerca Didattica(SIRD)
