She has researched the social and political dynamics of famine, conflict and humanitarian crises for over thirty years, focussing particularly on issues of food security, livelihoods, and forced migration. WHEN DISASTER MEETS CONFLICT About the research. When Disaster Meets Conflict (Discord) studied the nexus between humanitarian aid and disaster governance. It analysed how state, non-state and humanitarian actors respond to disasters in three conflict settings (high, low-medium, and post-conflict) in order to understand how the type of conflict impacts communities and the aid that the affected people are offered. HUMAN RIGHTS, GENDER AND CONFLICT STUDIES: SOCIAL JUSTICE When power starts to shift dramatically, advancing social justice can prove a complex and contradictory process. PhD programme. The International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) offers a four-year programme leading to an internationally recognized degree. All PhD researchers are firmly embedded in ISS' research programme. Since joining Erasmus University in Rotterdam 2009, ISS PhD researchers now receive an Erasmus University PhD Degree. INDICES OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Social development is about putting people at the centre of development. Since the 1990s there has been growing recognition that social development is critical for broader development outcomes, including sustainable economic growth. SUCCESSFUL PHD DEFENCE BY ADWOA GYAPONG On 9 December 2020, Adwoa Gyapong successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled 'Political Dynamics of Global Land Grabs: Exploring the Land-Labour Nexus on Ghana’s Eastern Corridor'. INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION The International Humanitarian Studies Association (IHSA) is a network engaged with the study of humanitarian crises caused by disaster, conflict or political instability. WELL-BEING, ECOLOGY, GENDER AND COMMUNITY It will tackle socio-ecological challenges linked to policy agendas.
