Before King Anawrahta came to power in the 11 th century, nat worship was the main belief system of Burma, but there was no pantheon to speak of. Water monitors are large (up to 50kg and 9 feet long) carnivorous reptiles.They eat everything from crabs to snakes, and even, on occasion, small crocodiles. They have a long, snake-like tongue which they use to smell, and they have a venomous bite which will kill small prey. Some people keep them as pets which is, frankly, bewildering.
